News in and
Around Washington
By J. O. HART.
The fourth was very quietly cel1
nbrated though everyone seemed
to have enjoyed himself. There
were many visitors here from all
sections of ;?!ie county, visiting
the national capital, some for the
first time. Just as usual on holi
days the -highways and -trains?are
crowded. Washington stands open
to visitors at all times, because, it
is the nation's capital, and there
is something of interest for one
to see at ali times.
The annual fireworks festival
was held on the monument ground
which makes a great display, a
beautiful, colorful sight.
Along with the many visitors
here, the nation's, capital is host
to the 25,000 Boy Scouts of America.
They are here from every
State in the Union. Their camp?
are pitched along side the tidal
basin, Potomac River and t h e
speedway. To look at this camp
reminds one of 1017, during the
war. i Out
of mo total number o f
Scouts there are about 300 Colored
Scouts. There should have
been 3,000 at least.
There were 5,000 Scouts, who
visited the Arlington National
cemetery, early on the morning
of the 4th to pay respect and
place a wreath on the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier.
Miss Nettie Ola Scott, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. William Scott
of Eastover, S. C., became the
bride of Dr. 11. Livingston Ashley
of Washington, D. C.
The ceremony was performed
Saturday, June 19, 1937 at the
Plymouth "Congregational ichurch
orr P Street, Nm-fV?wr?*t
The bride was given in mafi
rage by her hr>>th~or, Mr ?W+hlard
Scott, of Philadelphia, Pa.
The marriage was also witnessed
by her sister, Mrs. Marie J. Nelson
of Sumter, S. C.
The bride and groom are a t
