There were a number of whit

LIVE AT HOME FARMERS
General Information
Garden Soils
I
John R. Reese, Teacher cif Voc.
Agriculture at Sycamore. S. C.
Successful gardens have been
grown on almost every type of
wil found in South Carolina, the
main requirement being that the
soil be well drained: and nOt untied
laid with rock or hardpan close to
the surface. If possible a rich
soil should always be selected and
one that permits cultivation short
w, ly after rains. Sandy soils warm
up earlier in spring than do clay
soils an^! are easier to cultivation
while clay soils are more rententive
of moisture than sandy soils.
An ideal soul for gardening is one
which has a rich sandy loam topsoil
10 to 12 inches deep and a clay
subsoil. The sandy topsoil is
easily cultivated and worked, and
the clay subsoil aids in holding
moisture and preventing plant
food from leaching.
If you notice in last week "Live
at home farmers" article I wrote
about the soil and climatic con
dition in South Carolina for the
k growing of vegetables <fk>r th(
home and markets* This week im

owners in the selection of garder
