Magnifying Funerals
Humans have1 an inveterate propensity for clinging
to the outworn and the useless-. Notice; for
example, the buttons on the back of the Prince Albert
amti F.nglvsh .walking coats. Buttons .were
originally put there in order to keep the belt from
slipping down; and belt was worn to hold a sword
or dagger. We have put the belts away.' and have
thrown^away the dagger and sword, but we keep
the buttons. Our social life is just filled with such
relics which are harmless and human but perfectly
useless. There are some of these" hold-overshowever,
which are not so harmless, and. one of
these is the "magnified funeral". The- Negro?race
may be called a race of "funeral magnifiers." The
? custom of having a "btg funeral" which today prevails
so generally among NegToes, dates back to
the time when the funeral not only meant a holiday
for the hard-working Negroes, but it meant a
