Yancey, one of the. chief slave traders,

on his largo estate at Cape Palmas,
_had a uniue and characteristic method
of paying his debts. Having no
desire to pay a sum of $800 owed
another Liberian, he detailed one of
his numerous minions to get his creditor's;

to the sea. When the creditor came
to collect his money, Yancey boomed,
"If you can show mc where I owe
anything on your books, I'll gladly
p.iy it." The Vice-President thus became
a public benefactor, since his
act autoinaticllly freed all of his victim's
other debts from the burden of
payment.
Just a week or two before I arrived
in Monrovia, the large Trori-gate-inthe
office of Mr, John Loomis, the
American, Financial Adviser to the
Republic, was stolen. It had been
erroneously supposed by certain per.sons
that: documents of great importance
reposed therein. 'I*lu> police, as !
usual, were, completely at sea. .As
a last resort, the office clerks derided
to call in a witch doctor and see if
African magic could succeed where
police methods had failed.
Devil Man Gets Busy
Having received a liberal "dash"
the Devil Man got out his paraphernalia,
shook his rattles and gri gri
bags, uttered weird cries-and squrtds- and
danOod about the room. Finan- <
ally he dived down the street followed
by an excited crowd of clerks and
pedestrians., Suddenly he stopped be- 1
fore a pretentious Liberiari residence
and pointing dramatically to it shouted
"There!" and would go no farther.
It was the home of Hon. Edwin Barel.iy,
president of the Republic of Li- '
bcria! Great as was the resulting
merriment, this is hot to say that
President Barclay. committed or was
accused of the, theft. !
The?unmet ous?missionary schools?j

of creating a self-supporting State.
There are politicians in the Republic

In explanation, it may be pointed
out that the jump- in imports . from ..
1925 on was due largely to the'Firestone
Company' bringing In "supplies (
and the expenditure of loan money
abroad by Liberian itlicials who pur.
chase 1 e xpensive automobiles and had

money lasted.
A balance is e-ftablishcd by what
the Financial Advisor calls the. "In- 1
visiblos." There are:
(a) Money sent into Vhe country
by foreign mission board.
(b) Expenditures for maintenance
foreign development of the Firestone
plantations. ;
