AT ROYAL THEATRE
Star Plays Engineer in Absorbing
Series__oL_Adventures
. That Make ?Ythunder"
. One of Hi^'Rest
Pictures
"Thunder,? the new Lon .Chancy
starring vehicle,, a Mctro-GoldwynMayer
production, which opens Wednesday
attho Royal. Theatre, is decidedly
worthwhile entertainment", for
it tells a human interest story and la
set against a background of mighty
thrills and adventure.
'It "also shows the beautiful Phyllis
Haver in what she has announced as
her farewell to "the screen'.
Permeating all the scenes is breathtaking
adventure. Thundering locomotives
rush out of the dark like fire .
breathing .'.monsters; a crack limited;
races the Mississippi flood?and wins
?men -sacrifice their lives for their
calling, and so on.
Ha*-Tender RomanceThe
love theme is played between
James Murray and Miss Haver. IVJurray
plays the engineer's fireman son,
who deserts the road for'a "white 'col
lar" job in order to win the love of
an actress, played hy Miss Haver.
The. son's desertion is worse than
tragedy to the old man. In fact, when .
a'nothcr son, played by George Duryea
is killed performing the duties Of n
brakemnn. the father feels it less
keenly. However, in the end, ft is'
the girl's understanding that sends
trcr lover hnOk 10 the rhlll'Oad und his father.
Chancy attains a masterful character
iznt;on. He makes thoroughly untic
rs'taUdnble the grizzly, engineer
whose' first and deenest, lov'altv is to.
his road, his engines and his calling.'
A particularly appealing part of the
story is.the,devotion between the Old
man and his littlc grandson, flayed
by Wally. Albright, Jr. An unusual
feature in a Chancy film, and one
weleorliftf by this reviewer, is . the
happy ending.
"Thunder" was written byJBryon
Morgan, who has caught the spirit of
railrond men as. they are. and succes- "
fully placed them on the screen and
for that, great credit is due. him.
