Less Poison ?"d More Prayer [p
-?? **? ,. ~ " 1
It is an awful scene to go through c
-the-cotton flelds-?f this country and lj
--v*y- - ?ec thnjdo-,tructoin that is beifig done n
by the boil weevil.: Many stalks are t
" rour and six feet Lull with less than c
a dOzeu bolls that will-' yield friut. -p
The most pitiful Jthing is, to see theSIT ~E
cotton or a ppj?"" *" th'f incnnt
With a fertilizer bill that has taken c
' over half of their crop's prdiit; they .r
are sharing the' remainder with the i
poison and leaving practically nothing -r
for themselves. Now it is rnot my, r
purpose to go up against, the scien- "r
tific laboratories of this country in r
advising the farmers, but if I were a e
cotton planter I would not pay ten 1
cents for all the bolt weevil poisorF 1
thatrta" manufactured. If it kills the
?~ boll weevil where; does he go to die*. .
Surely not in the field. What farmer _t
has ever s^en dead weevils as a re- 1
ault of hio'poioon? If this pui.suii "t
vould come up to ita. recommendations ?
^he dotton lields* Ought be " literally" 2
? covered with dead bodies of the boll *
weevils. Tell me what affect has the N
poison upon -thd boll wevils, when itis
given him for breakfast and aa 1
flooding rain comes before'noon ? ^
Who is responsible for the cost of 1
the labor and poisor\? It appears to 1
be just a little more than a child's
play for grown'?peo^le to be trying <
to kill the boll weevil. Allow me to" (
eske these questions. From whence canie
this yveevil pest? Did th'^y come ?
, from God or from man? It is all ;
folly .to believe that "man iaii put out (
, of existence that which the Almighty 1
- allows to exist. It does seem to me '
that Christians living in a Christian
age, oilghtr-have as"^"much faith in
. God's power to move this evil as
rnaroan, the heathen king of Egypt.
When frogs, lic.e- and other pests infested
the land of Egypt,' .Pharoah called'for
Moses and Aaron and said: -i
"Entreat the Lord that He may take
.j. away .these things from me." I be- i
jit?ve from the depths of my heart that <
if the people of God would cry unto
Him against* this'evil; it would be removed;
And I "further believe that <
whenever, this destructive insect is
> moved, it will be by the power of
God and not by the poison of men. J
* I therefore advise more prayer and I
less poison as a remedy for the bool :
weevil.? .? ' : ' ? 1
School Teaching The Leading Profession
for Colored People
Reading the editorials of last week.
in me L.eaaer, one would almost be
" ~*7~. moveii to tears to note- the salaries
that are to be paid colored teachers. ,
The trouble is that there is nothing
for colored girls to do but teach
school or go to the ovash tub. Colored

And with all these years of our boast ^

nothing better to oflfeir them.?In fact, we
haven't as good. It is a sad fact. ,
Everybody knows' that when a market

_? Hundreds , of boys and girls coming from
