'< Waiters of the Jefferson Hotel are < hired and fired by either or both of 1 the head waiters. They demand re1 spect from the waiters but are in no " sense mdfiarehialT" The management of the house takes nothing to do with 1 it's waiting force. . The waiters of. the Jefferson Hotel I* are planning to give a. banquet before long which they hope will be made an ] annual affair. \ Head waiter, Mr. Doby in an im promptu address to the waiters on I Monday (24th) complimented the idea very highly. The two head waiters, Messrs. Doby and Williams, feel that an annual get-together meeting of the waiters in the presence of their wives and female friends will J serve as agreat refining process nad ; will go far toward the creation of ? new ideals and the making of new standards of living, which our peo[ pie are sq.greatly in need of. It is ' their point of view^ that waiters have ? a great opportunity to demonstrate ! to the white man the qualities of gen[ uine intelligence and moral manhood, r since it is by contact only that the true values - of a thing is known, I Where persons have the tangent f nnints nf cnmmrm tViAro is always a lack of understanding, there 5 fore a joint meeting of all the waitr era with some one to explain the elg? mentary points of e&ntaet aiid ussoeia? doubt a benefit. . . . ~ Mr. Williams sees the possibility .. of the employees of Jefferspn Hotel ? may be termed a fair portion of theii earnings into a Building and Loan AsL aociation. or some other institution f whereby their money ..could be put tl 6 usury. The idea may be impracticable but it does not argue the fact thai m. Negroes generally should organize ? institutions of savings and trust 11 they ever expect to cope with other > people. So much for that, if May it be said here find now that t waiters are not as big crooks as has : been and is thought of them.
