Our friends at DueWest are actively moving in the enterprfse of establishing a Female College at that plauo. It is thought that a subscription of $5000 in that community would iasure J the euccess ofthe Institution. Ono of ?!? ?. I suggested is erect a building largo enough to furnish Recitation rooms for ?.he College, and Boarding apartment* for a family and fifty or sixty pupils. All succcas to the enterprise I THE FARMER AND PLANTER. Mr. R. M. Storks, tho Editor of this valuable monthly was with us during our recent Fn:r, and expressed himself highly gratified at the Exhibition. He announced through the President of the Society, that he would present ten copies of his journal, to be distributed as prizes at the next Fair. Mr. Storks is the acreiit for t>-?? Plow which he is introducing to publio attention, and he will make a trial of iU merits, at this plate, on Salo Day next A USEFUL INVENTION. We had the opportunity a few days since of examining at the Saddle and Harness Manufactory of Mr. Gdwabd wtstfieln, of our Village, , a vary useful invention of his own, in the way | of a uew mode of attaching an umbrella to a Saddle, and which must conduce very mnch to the comfort of tha equestrian. The umbrella is , inserted in the horn of the Saddle, and is so easily and securely attached, thst whilst it is ^ almost impossible to displace it by force, it can ve readily removed or adjusted at pleasure. , AH who have seen it express themselves highly , delighted with ths invantion, and Mr. Wkstfixld is now ?Dgaged in executing various orders. W? suppose he will soon apply for a patent. EB8KINE COLLEGE. I We Team from t lie Tcleseope, that at th? late , tneetiogof the Associate Reformed Synod ofthe ( South, Prof. Edmund L. In our last ieeue, wa published a brief account of the Fair which was thee In progress, and promised to reour to tbe subject, when we had more time and space at our disposal. The perusal of the lengthy List of Premiums awarded, which wo publish in another column, will convey however to our readers a better idea of the nunibtr and variety of the articles^* exhibition, than any additional remarks that we could make. The list is unusually complete, compri. sing premiums to the aggregate value ol more than 4700, and rewarding the skill of the sue cessful competitor*, in almost every department of the useful and ornamental. In additiou to these, it will be aeen that w?rirvu? hiTe recommended that m nomWr ?f new premiums be awarded at the next Exhibition, and we bare no doubt that the resources of the Society, will enable the Executive Committee to make important addition* to the prevent Hit. We trust that ita perusal will inspire oar readers generally to enter the lista of competition, and that a growing spirit of agricultural pro* gresa may be excited, which will make each sueceeding Exhibition of the Society an improvement upon the prececding. Should we be able to do so, we would be glad to publish a ?oEnplate list of all the artioles upon Exhibition aa w? think it would be of interest to our reader* and of use for future reference. Tbe success of our late Fair has far exceed?d the expectations of the most sanguine, and ia a matter of pride and congratulation, to all who are interested on the prosperity of the District We were not awart of the general interest which hndTjoen awakened in behalf of the Society, and lien to wer? not prepared for the extont and variety of tbe Exhibition. The atter* dance on both days was very large, and Dotting occurcd to mar the general enjoyment. All came to be amused and the access of the Exhibition, gave now zest to the epirit of the occasion. One of the most attractive features of ?L- -c_: ?i. J'- " - ?ua * ?ir tt?? we urowaii4?n?me orjgnt array of gay visitor*, affording a Fair representation of the beauty, wealth, and intelligence of the District. Every section of the District represented, and the Saluda and tie Savannah' vied with each other in liberal contributions ?f "brare men and fair women," who were ev4ry way worthy to hear off the richest prises of the day. The Annaal AddrM h?(?r? ih? delivered by tfc? Han. A. Bun*, in^ ithub??o generally tiomaended a* eoe ?f hie beet effort*. It waa an aarneat appeal is b?^ali of improvod raodea of tiilaga, and abounded in euggeationa of 1 great praetidkl triadom. The Speaker aaaumed a decided atahd against the re-opening of the , African Slave Trade, and aapported hie poei- i tion by a atrong array of facta and argument*. A cop}- of the Addreaa liaa been aolicited for 1 publication. ' In conclusion, we refer otir readea to the re- t porta of the yarioua Committee* for atnpla de- ' tails of the moat attractave artielca upon Exhi- ' tion. , THE HABFER'S PEBBY DTBimMtimoif. Upon the reception of the news at Ba' imore, Richmond and Washington troops were lespatched to) the scans, and by Tuesday ntrniog, ths stronghold sf insurgents was ta- 1 ten, after killing allexcept five taken prisoners. >ix citizens were killsd aud one marine. Ths President bae directed the Distriot attorney r )uld to deliver over tke prisoners to the Vir;inian authorities, as it was under the laws of hat State, that the murder had bees comnitted. 2 The Preeideot has reoeived the mmm Mi looomeoU which were found oo the person and n the valise of Brown.
