' fN CONSEQUENCE of the hardness of the
X times, and tho prevalance of the' opinioa
that it will not do to sell cotton. I lfavc determined,
from rfeceseity, to offer my goods for
Cash, in future. The credit system .hus prov?d
a failure. I find it impossible to buy goods
for Cosh, and tho short time usually allowed
by jobbers in our commercial marts, and sell
tuern, in too many instances, oa all time, running
to a never-ending eternity. I lmvc found
that retail merchants in the country, although
roueli abused by their customers, nre the voret
imposed upon, perhaps of any other cIups of
j. , ' , /<. tnen in the world. There must be some other
* V*k'*' ' understanding about the matter, and the only
way to huve it is, by the merchant asserting
bis rights, then maintaining litem, or "perish
amidst the ruiiis."?This was a maxim with our
forefathers, and we, their degenerate eons,
have hallowed their names f?r their firmness,
hut in the jubilee of glorv hav? lostfei^ht
of the maxim which inspired our adoration.
' In the course of events" I find it has become
necessary to go back to "first principles,"
and either "stand or fall" by the result. The
' prevailing idea that a merchant has money be'
. y cause he has a store full of goods is a great misr"
\ take ; it is one of the proofs of his bciiti; just
out of inontey, and the people must be made to
understand that lie is not a thing to twist just
any way, and convert himself into money, or
out of it, just as he pleases, for he must have
money in order to have it, just like any of the
lest of God's fallen creatures.
With the determination to dolhe verv best.
I can for "God, my country and" self, I "throw
out the above platform, upon which to pluce
my fblurc business operations, nud will stand
upon it as long as there is plank left.
