The BurdeU Murder Trifcla. Theao trials commenced before the New York Court of Oyer and Terminer, Judge Davis presiding, Monday Inst. The case of Mrs. Cunningham was first taken up, when her counsel, Mr. Clinton, waived the reading of the indict< isent, plead "not guilty," and announced his client ready for trial. The remainder of the day was spent in cmpannelling a jury. The Eveuing Post of that city gives the following account of the appearance of the accused : Mrs. Cunningham and her two daughters, Helen and Augusta, were seated behind the railing on the right hand of the judge. They were richly but plainly dressed in mourning garb. Mrs. Cunningham wore a black silk. All the three ladies wore impenetrable brown veils, toliich were never for a moment removed, and sat immovable with a downcast air. A lady Friend of the family sat with them. John J. Eckel- occiinUil ? ?.'?k witliin 4lt? behind the counsel, lie is genteelly dreesed in a plain black suit and blaek cravat, nnd wears a ricli set of sbirt studs. On the little fingor bf his left hand gleams a valuable ring. His beard nnd iflustache are full nnd dark, and J?e wears a handsome brown wig or toupee. He converses freely nud cheerfully with his bounscl and other friends arouud him, and apparently regards the whole proceedings with the indifference of one conscious of his iuuo> fcence. His long imprisonment does not appear to Iiave worn upon him, and no one looking upon his placid and rather prepossessing features, nnd mild hazel eye, can well imagine him to have been guilty of the terrible murder with which he stands clmrged. His stature is rather light, and his features arc smaller and more delicately formed than Was represented in the engravings. Mrs. Cunniugham, on removing her black Veil, disclosed it face very pale, but resolute, in ti ai. _ r- + -vu incic nut iiic imuicst poBSIlMe tinge of pink, or slight carnation on hcrchcek, which hail a somewhat artificial look. Her countcnance bore an expression of deep sadnesa, mingled with half-concealed anxiety, which might be attributed to care for her children. Sho spoke a few words in a low, calin tone to her counsel, and occasionally cost a furtive .glance upon persons around her. TlIK SOKTIIEP.N pRKSBYTKRIAN REVIKW. E. II.
