Although very kindly provided with an eligible position and th-i necessary conveniences for "Inking notes" at the grunt lirooks demonstration on Friday last, at which we had the pleasure of lieing, our limited space precludes anything like a full report of the proceedings of the occasion. It was certainly tli?s largest assemblage of the people we have ever seen in South Carolina. There were at least, we should judge, six thousand persons present; some say seven, others eight, and others ng:dn oven ten thousand. v The dinner jnovidod was roallv atromen dous one?-fully adequate lo tlie wants ol the vast assemblage, and even more, fur, a.k we were told, there were left some fifteen ni twenty carcases untouched, after all had partaken. At about 11 o'clock Dr.S.V.Cain, 1'iesident of the Day, called tho meeting to order, and a double column, forming an avenue from the stand to the hotel, was formed. Down this avenue, Col. Brooks, escorted by Gov. Adams and Col. H. T, "Watts, and followed by Hons. I?. Toombs A. i\ liutler, J. L. < )rr, I >. I>. Wardlaw, Gen. S.McGowan, Col. A. II. Gladden, and other invited guests, was conducted to tla stand. After a stirring air from tin; Hand*. Dr. Cain rose and welcomed th<? audience, who had met to do honor to I heir gallant Representative. This demonstration, he said, would show their approval of hi> course on all occasions, and especially tin last net?a noble and dating act, and ont which may yet he the means of hastening the issue of equality or disunion. His re marks were appropriate, and well delivered Gen. McGowan was then introduced a? the orator of the day, and was received will ? uenny greeting or applause. Jle pro cceded in an able and truly eloquent inanuei to discharge tho honorable duty to which he had been called, and, as one of his warmest friends, we have groat pleasure ir saying that his effort was entirely sati>factory to us. (Jen McGownn, with a fine commanding personal appearance, the fires of eloquence brightly glowing in his soul, and a voice which needs but little experience in the open air to make it one of the most sonorous, requires but the battle ground and a campaign to win the brightest laurels of distinction as a popular orator. His speech was fully reported for the New York press, by a stenographer in attendance, and if we can get hold of it in print we intend to give it a place in our pages. We have been able to secure only the closing paragraph, which was addressed to Col. Brooks on presenting him the golden goblet in behalf ol the citizens of Abbeville District. It is as follows: Sir: In addressing your constituents, I have alluded, in brief terms, to soino of tin measures and some of the incidents of the last Congress, in reference to which they approve your course. It could not be ex pected that I should repeat them to yon personally. The long-continued strusfjrle in whioh you have lately been engaged is now over; and it is my pleasing duty, in the presence and by the authority of your fel low-citizens here assembled, with hearty congratulations to welcome you back intc the limits of your own proud nnd grateful ScfUth Carolina, whose character 5*011 have defended, and whose spirit, as illustrated 1"4" It-. * ,M.ui.fc.iuuniJt) icvuiunon, ana latterly alresl at Contreras, Chernbusco, Chapultepec, and ?aritade Beien, you have so well exempli fied, maintained, and honored. Thif Congressional district now enrols your name in the long list of statesmen and ora tort who have ?already given her renown and bids trie give you assurance of a cordial and unanimous re-election, at an early day, to that Congress for which we think you wortbyr and where we intend you shall remain, without fear, favor, or affection, or any dread whatever of expulsion. This distinguished Georgian and able 1 Senator, on his way to the Brooks dinner, ? was the guest of Col. Jno. A. Calhoun, near this place, on Thursday night, 2d inst. News having come to town of his arri> val at Col. Calhoun's, a procession of our ' folks, men and boys, numbering perhaps two hundred, and led by the Jocasse band, dms 1 formed and marched out to welcome Mr. 1 Toombs to our Stato and District.
