The policy of continuing the present anmini
appropriation of from ?25,000 to r
$40,000 to tlio South Carolina College is ''
/ c
exciting considerable attention and discushion
in several portions of the State. The F
candidates tor the Legislature, in some of c
the Districts, have been interrogated as to
their views on the subject, and the most of *
tin-in so interrogated have expressed them- t
selves as opposed to I he present policy. Some t
will not vote any further appropriation, of
any size, whilst others are for cutting oft"
the supplies as Jack did the monkey's tail?
by degrees?a piece at a time. I n
Tliia opposition to llic present large, L
not to Ray extravagant, appropriations is t!
construed or misrepresented by '.hose of a ii
different faith into hostility to the College t:
itself?a desire for its total overthrow. As
one belonging to the lioet of uncompromiB- n
ing opponents to the present policy of ap- u
propriatione, we prptest against' such con- s
struction or misrepresentation. Whilst we tl
unhesitatingly reiterate our declaration of e
decided opposition to the appropriations as ii

year upon a meal of from $25,000 to $40,300,
from tin; Slate treasury, it is no sacri
lego tu say let il die / And if this be hostility
to it, then are we hostile.
T?ut we believe it could live, ami would
live successfully, if not upon its own resources,
at least upon a much more economical
system of State ai?l. It seems to us
that an institution, of fifty years standing,
supplied with all the necessary buildings,
libraries, apparatus, tfce., having its full
measure of fame already acquired, and having
two or three hundred students, all ahunhuitly
able to pay the very highest rates of
tuition, in attendance, ought to be scif-sus

The philosophy'or chemistry of bread-!

or the house cook ; nnd still, it being
lie staff of life, many fall daily victims uf

Let us investigate it in a popular manier.
The grain or corn of which bread is
iltimately made, consists mostly of three
ubstanees, starch, gluten and sugar. After

luten adheres, and which is the most nuritiouft,
Weil the gluten eontaio* the
