We learned from the Carolinian, of Saturday last, that Col. Brooks arrived in Columbia on Friday morning, and yielded to an invitation from the citizens to remain and meet them at night. The meeting convened at the City Ilall, but finding that nol more than one-fourth of ' W..FMM JIIWKJIll could get admittance, it wm adjourned to the Court House. The Mayor, on the pari of the citizens then presented Col. Klugh presented t ' us last sale-day with a liberal specimen of J1 Catawba grapes from his flout inhing vine- ' yard. lie* informB us that his crop this j year, considering the age of his vines, was j, really a largo one. lie has in process of ji manufacture a small quantity of wine, from f which, judging by the Dr.'s past attentions j to the printers, we shall ex]>cct a specimen in the course of a few months; and if, in the meantime, we can conceive a way to forget certain promises now of force, we shall be apt to prove his wine as well as | his trranes. "We want to see a samrvlo. at ' *v, - , J nny rateI Dr. Togno, wlio saw the sample from Dr. i K.'s vineyard, informs us that his grapes j have been fully as fine this season, and that ( he lias also some of the juice undergoing the wine-making process. Our Advertising Prices. < The Proprietors of the Abbeville Jlan- | ncr and ourselves have adjusted a scale of prices for advertising, to which each arc. ; bound in honor hereafter strictly to adhere. | It will be seen, by clo.se cxmuinatiou, that i we have advanced the currem rates a little. This, we say in all candor and sincerity, was , essential to insure to each party anything of > an adequate remuneration for tho services 1 rendered. Whilst prices in almost every ( ! other department, of labor are advancing, i why may not those for the arduous duties 1 discharged by our profession be allowed to do the same ? An intelligent and liberal community will, we icel assured, Unci no negative answer. The cost of living now is far beyond what it was when even we first entered into the business, sonu. seven years ngo ; whilst the prices of services in , our department of business have constantly ! depreciated instead of advanced. We can- < not believe that a single patron of either ' concern could be found who desires that ( the laborer should receive less than the i worth of his time constantly and labori- ' ously employed ; and we a^re them, upon ( our honor as men, that the rates we have 1 established will not give us more. Of course this arrangement will not affect in any way tliosc advertisements in- i scrtcd previous to the present issue of the two papers, but from the present week, in- 1 elusive, vo deduction from the published rates can possibly be made. If it were necessary, we could easily show to any candid mind the propriety of the course we have adopted in this matter ; but we think there will be none to question oursincciity in the general statement made. The Congressional Election. It inay be well to rcmiml the managers of elections and all others interested that the regular election for members of Congress is held on the same day as that for members of the State Legislature. The Carolinian calta attention to this fact, and says no writs of election will bo issued beyond the public advertisement in the newspapers. Tn this Congressional District, Col. Ex-Govcrnor Aiken, the Representative from the Charleston District, declines a reelection, and ooncludes his address to his constituents with the following liberal and jKunouo senumciiu opeaKing ot tne regret lie feels at severing his conuexion with then) as their Representative, lie says: "That regret I shall endeavor to forget in the earnest wish I shall ever cherish for your individual happiness and welfare?the advancement of our Cify and State?the preservation of our Union, with the maintenance of its Constitution?nnd a long continuance of that unexampled prosperity and glory which have been vouchsafed to us. as a chosen people, to enjoy nnd illustrate." Gen. McQueen, in another District, will be opposed by Col. W. G. Dudley, at present a member of the Stato Senate. An 'nnbticessful effort whs made in the last election to defeat Gen. McQueen. The other members, - Messrs. Orr, Boyce and Keitt, we suppose will have no opposition. The Obnoxious Proviso. Stephens, in Pennsylvania? The Penmylmniun, in its report of the great two days' meeting of the Democracy at Chnmbersburg, Pa., thus refers to our distinguished representative of the 8th Congressional District: 'It was reserved, howerer, for Tuesday, at the regular Democratic Mass Convention, to introduce to the great throng in the grove, the famous Georgia orator, Hon. A. II. Stephens. Ho spoke for more than an hour. His speech was calm, statesmanlike, and irresistible, and it was remarkable that while taking new views of some of the great questions involved in the present contest, his argument was in substance as that of the gentlemen who spoke before and after him. lie was heard with earnest attention ; and his eloquence excited in his hear urt> uuuuuiuss cnimisiasm. feeble in trame, but mighty in intellect, his voico could bo heard to the remotest verge of the crowd : and hia clear, fluto-likc tone, gave a rare J charm to tbo principles he bo ably defended. In the evening a great throng called at his lodgings to serenade him, when he made another speech scarcely less able than his effort of the afternoon." A New Mode ok Saving Bacon.? About a couple of years ago we were entortninn<1 at #1i*? Iiahca o ...1*1- ? ?<v vu.iv v/i <? menu null >i dinner of eggs and bncon. We complimented our host oil the superior quality of liis bacon, and were curious to inquire the way to like success in tho preparation of a dainty article of diet, though one that is better fitted for the palate of an epicure than for the stomach of a dyspeptic. To our surprise we were informed that that portion of our menl was cooked eight months before. I)pon asking for an explanation, he atatod that it was his practice to slice and fry his bacon immediately on its being cured, and then pack it in its own fat. When occasion came for using it, the slices slightly refried have all the freshness and flavor of new bncon just prepared. By this precaution our friend always succeeded in "saving lus bacon," fresh and sweet, through the hottest of the weather. N. E. Farmer.
