Kerr, the old and enterprising grocer, is

to his "Mock. It would be hard to imagine

Presbyterian Church of this city?which is
now erecting a magnificent church edifice
on the site of the one burned down opposite
Jj.Hayettc square?has lately given a second
! and unanimous call to tlio lie v. Dr. Palmer,
of South Carolina, to accept the pastorale
of that church. And wo learn, with 110
small feeling of satisfaction, that the call
is likely to bo accepted. Dr. Palmer is
a solid man, and one of the most distinf
guished pulpit orators of this country. This
is just the place for a man of his abilities
, anil power ot doing good, and we most ar
dently hope New Orleans will be so fortu;
natc as to make so valuable an acquisition
to her permanent population.

! Fatal Accident.?The whole commtiJ

i last, of the almost, instant death hy accident
of a lovely yoiinu lady of our village. It
appears that on thu Misses Alexander alighting
from Col. M. M. Norton'* carriage, at
Mr. Sanuiel Reid's in the aflernoon of' the
day above staled, the horses become frightened
and ran away. Que of tlio ladies had
jnst been handed from the carriage, and,
when Miss Sue Alexander was in the act
of alighting, the horses started. They were
soon in full speed, when she jumped from
the carriage, receiving injuries about the
head and neck thereby which caused her

about 0 o'clock A. M., a very- preceptible
shock of an eartbquako was felt in- tha
counties of NeUou, Amherst, and the South

observed tho phenomenon. The tuotion of
the earth, it was bupposed, lasted from ten
seconds to half a minute, and was accompanied
with a low, rumbling noise like distant
