A Wonderful Negro.?Wo hail tho
pleasure tho other day of witnessing the
performance of a negro boy, syc years old,
upon the piano. This wonderful child has
nover been under an instructor, is blind,
and yet ho can play anything he hears after
a few trials. Ho has been playing about
one year, and manifests a great fondness
for music of the highest order. He is tho
property of Gen. Bethutie, and was born
nbout three miles from this city. We are
down on humbugs, but our incredulity has
been satisfied in this instance, and wo think
this little negro a prodigy as well as a musician.?Columbus

Madisonville, (Texas,) Oct. 18.?The
corn crop of Texas this year is very short,
on account of the drought, ami the cotton
crop is almost a failure, in consequenco of
the backwardness of the season. Most of
the cotton was young, and the worm started
on it before it matured, and entirely destroyed
the plant, or at least as far as I have
heard. The wheat crop in the upper country
is fine. Sections of our country have
been visited this fall with a very troublesome
disease called flux, which have proved fatal
with many.

poisoned Col. W. B. Wilson's little daughter,
suffered the extreme penalty of the
law, on Friday, 2d inst. She met death
with a calm and composed mind, shaking
hands with several friends and asking them
to meet her in Ileaven. She said "all was
well, the only thing she dreaded was the
