New Literary and Political Journal,
TO BE rUBUSIIED
AT COLUMBIA, S. C.
rI~MIE undersigned, late Editor of The South
.JL. Carolinian und Columbia Banner, proposes
to publish, in the city of Columbia, a
Literary, Political and News Journal, to be
called
"TIIE EXAMINER."
In making this announcement, I am aware
that I propose to engage in an enterprise not
free from difficulties; but these I will endeavor
to provide against, by securing a"Subscription
List that will place the paper be3*ond the reach
of fuilure. Houth Carolina can richly support,
at her Capital, a leading Literary and Political
Weekly Jburual, and to her people I now
issue thin Prospectus, feeling assured the enterprise
will be sustained, and that they will
support a Home Jonrnal of the character of
that now proposed. As a
LITERARY JOURNAL,
For the home circle, "The Examiner will be
conducted with a view to render it at least e
; qnal to any ever published at. the South. The
| choicest, selections of English and American
Literature will be made for its columns, and a
I number of able Contributors will be secured.
I will endeavor, in this deportment, to make it
a journal worthy of the patronage and steady
support of the people of this State and of the
South. As a
POLITICAL JOURNAL,
The Examiner will abide by the old land marks
of the State Rights Democracy. Independent
of national parties, it will take a stand as a
faithful co-operator in the great work
of maintaining Southern Rights and promoting
Southern Union. It will be the organ
of no political part}-?the exponent of no political
creed?whi?-li has not. for one of its cardinal
principles "the Equality of the South in
the Union, or Independence out of it." This is
no new faith, bnt one which South Carolina
has long and earne*tly contended for.
NEWS JOURNAL.
The Examiner will contain the latest News,
Foreign and Domestic, received up to the hour
of publication. It will give full and correct
Market Itcporta and Prices Current. Our readers
in the country may rely on strict attention
being paid to this important feature of a newspaper.
It will give full and accurate reports
of the Proceedings of the Legislature and of
Congress, and the acts and doings of the various
political organizations. All news worth
giving to its readers will be carefully culled for
its columns.
' SIZE AND STYLE.
The-Examiner will bo one of the largest
Weekly Journals in the Southern States, printed
with new and elegant type, on fine white
paper, and issued in large quarto form of eight
pages, containing forty column* of interesting
reading matter. It will be the handsomest paper
ever published in South Carolina.
I have thus given an outline of the principal features
of the Examiner. Carolinians or tne people
of the South ought to reed no fuither ap
IJciu, in view 01 Liie present aspect ot political
affairs, to induce them to sustain with vigor
and efficiency their own Press and Literature.
TERMS.
Two Dollars per annum, payable hi advance.
The first year's payment will be required on
the receipt of the first number of the paper,
which will be issued so soon as I receive a sufficient
number of subscribers tor ensure its
success, probably early in October. Send
forward your names.
, 1ST Postmaster* who will be t>o kind at to
forward me names of subscribers will confer a
favor, and will receive a copy of the Examiner
without charge. Address me at this place.
