A Proposition.?We are authorized by
a gentleman of high standing, and an old
line Whig, to say that ho will be one of
ten thousand men to pay a lunidrod dollars
each to raise a fund to settle Southern men
in Kansas. It strikes us as an excellent idea.
Let this be done and it settles the character
of that territory beyond question?cannot
the ten thousand be found in Georgia ? and
cannot a lniudred thousand in the Southern
States? It would be well for an organization
to be formed in every county in the
South to raise a fund for this purpose. If
there are in this count}', or elsewhere, any

"Sam"' seems to be furnishing the country
with any number of candidates for office.
In Philadelphia the Know Nothing organ
announces a list of only seventeen candidates
for the office of Sheriff, and sixteen for the
office of Register of Wills. If Americans do
not govern America, it will not be for
want of men willing to accept the offices.
Samuel M'Donakl, who recently died in
Baltimore, left an estate valued at 8600,000,
which he bequeathed to various charitable
iiiauiuuoiip, 10 ins mends and relatives. I
He was one of the richest men of Baltimore.
Among the bequests is the sum of 68,000
to the Second Presbyterian church. He
manumitted all his slaves.

amount of custom that a judicious
system of advertising brings to a store enables
the proprietor to sell at a smaller profit
than those ean afford who have an accidental
customer now and then.

in issuing them, and it is therefore highly
