Cholera Infantum. I
T?U- ^-11? ? -- -
iuc luuuwmg is iroin a distinguished |
clergyman who never says what lie does!
not know : This is the season for Cholera
Infantum. Many years ago I received from
an excellent physician a recipe for this prevalent
and often fatal disease, which I have
used now for twenty-three years in my own
and other families with uniform success.
Every intelligent physician will see that the
combination meets every ordinary indication
of the disease. There may be cases of uncontrollable
violence, which no remedy will j
arrest. But I never have known this
remedy to fail in any case in which it has
been tried ; and I believe that in most cases
which prove fatal from ordinary neglect and
subsequent treatment, the timely use of this
recipe would have saved the patients. It
never produces irritation, debility, or other
bad consoquences. It is as follows :?Calomel,
12 grains; Opium, 1 errain : "Powrlmwl I
Cinnamon, 25 grains; Prepared Chalk, 48
grains. Mix and divide into sixteen powders.
It will be seen that there arc three
quarters of a grain of calomel and one-sixteenth
of a grain of opium in each powder.
Keep a box of those powders on hand. As
soon as a child is aflected with bowel complaint
so seriously as not to bo promptly
relieved by a change of diet, give one of
those powders,- and repeat every four hours
until relief is obtained. One powder will
often relieve, two generally, four always,
flTnonf ?n *- 1
>u nubu viuium, ana rapia cases as 1
have never seen. In the summer time during
the irritation of dentition, the disease
will probably return eveiy week or two, and
it may be as ccTtainly relieved with perfect
safety in a few hours by one or two powdere.
As far as my observation goes, there
. ought never to be a death or a protracted j
illness from cholera infantum. Some persons
have.a violent antipathy to calomel, derived
in sbme measure from the abuse of it, but
mora frequently from use of it in cases which
by- previous neglect or bad treatment liad
been rendered incurable. The remedy last i
resorted to is then charged with the effect
* of that previous nocrlect. or bn/1
Those persons may be assured that none of ;
the evils they apprehend from the use j
of calomel will result from the free but s
judicious use of those powders.?The above (
valuable recipe was sent us the other day ,
by a female friend, whose success in the
treatment of the sick in h&r" own large fanj- '
'flv might entitle any remedy to credit": j

Legal Etliicn.
Messrs. Millars; The remarks of your
correspondent F., on (lie subject of legal
ethics, have brought back to my memory
a scene which occurred sonic six months,|
ago in a London criminal eourl. A young j,
man stood indicted for having stolen at i'
night into a young lady's room, clambering |
over neighboiing roofs, and having robbed
her of certain jewels. The barrister, who
found nothing upon which he might rest a
decent defence of the prisoner," suggested
to the jury that, perhaps, tlio ladv, rt woman
of irreproachable character, had made
an appointment with the prisoner, had given
him the jewels, and finding she would be
discovered, had seen no other escape from
disgrace than turnimr lu-r lovor into . i^iimi
nal. Tlic ju<*de was going to stop the
slandering lawyer, when tin* prisoner rose j
aiul cried : 4*Sir, that is not in your l?ri?rf;
what you say is not true*, and 1 would not
be acquitted at this rate." The thief was
better than the lawyer, whoso discomfiture
was increased by the judge's unreserved
remarks on his ui.blu.-hing conduct, while
the bench assured the prisoner that his conduct
should have its weight in settling the.
amount of punishment for his crime.

of turpentine by dipping a rag or sponge 1
fastened on your gun rod into the liquid, j
and swabbing them out tliree or four times, j
when they will be cleared form all impuri-;
tics, and can be used almost instantly, as
the turpentine will evaporate and leave the ;

After being washed thus, there is no danger

this for years, and found it useful."
