The ladies of Arabia stain their fingers and toes red, their eyebrows black, and their lips blue. In Persia, they paint a black streak round the eyes, and ornament their faces with various figures. In Greenland the women color their faces with blue and yellow, whilst tho Hottentot women paint in compartments of red and blacjc. Hindoo females, when desirous of appearing particularly lovely, smear themselves with a mixture of saffron, turmeric and grease. -In ancient Persia an aqniline nose was often thought worthy of the crown ; but the Sumatran mother carefully flattens the nose of her daughther. An African beauty must have sinaJl eyes, thick lips, and a large tlat linsfi. Mb. Benson, A well known merchant residing at Pendleton, favored us some time since with a sight of a bill of goods, purchased by his father, in the year 1800. ^was, indeed, astonishing to perceive the difference existing between the price of articles which were purchased at that time, and' the price at which the same articles may be bought for now. Cotton cards, we notice, sold for $1 20, now boiTglit for 40 cents. One yard of calico 75 cents, now maybe bought for 12 1-2. Nothing was said about the price of corn, but wo doubt whether the price per bushel, at that timo, was equal to what it is now. Mr. B. further informed us that the first cottou seed introduced into Greenville district was carried there by his father in saddlo bags. This was, we believe, in the year 1798. Cotton was then Belling for forty cents per pound in this State.?Kcoioce Courier. During tlie first three months of the present year 15,677 emigrants arrived at New York from foreign parts against 23,726 for the same period of the previous year, and 26,544 for a like period of 1853. During the month of March this year the number arriving was but 1,069, of whom 912 were Germans, 445 from Ireland, 335 from England, 102 from France, and 90 from Switzerland. According totlio Journal of commerce, a shrewd observer, who has paid mucu attention to tlie subject, and has recently returned from a European tour, calculates that during the whole of the present year the German emigration will be about 175,000, making a total of 250,000. Accidents on the Railroad.?'The night train for Columbia ran off tho track a few miles this side of that place early on Friday morning. Some of tho cars were smashed, but though the passengers were terribly alarmed, none of them were injured. J < i ?i 'Afnlt I Mr. Orr's Address.?A crowded and brilliant auditory filled the Institute Hall last night to listen-to Mr. Orr's address, lie spoke an hour and a quarter, and during the entire time, was listened to with fixed attention. His leading topic was the necessity to the wealth and prosperity of society of a proper distribution of labor and capital, lie showed how a disregard to this necessity in South Carolina had impaired her progress, and thrown her chief city, Charleston, in the rear of the other cities of the Union ; that Agriculture had absorbed all other pursuits to its own injury, lie reviewed, in a sensible manner, the present condition of Manufactures, Mechanic Arts, and Agriculture, and upon each was made suggestions of value and pressing in terest. To Make Phimb Vineoak.?A correspouclcnt of the Ohio Cultivator vouches for the merit of the following recipe for making vinegar. Take and mix one quart of molasses, three gallons of rain water, and one pint of yeast. Let it ferment and stand for four weeks, and you will have the best of vinegar. I Sudden Death.?Wo regret to learn itliat Mr. Levi Williams died suddenly while on his way to the Village, on Wednesday last. It is supposed his death was caused from apoplexy. lie was found about four miles from this place, lying by the side of the road. Mr. Williams was an old and respected citizen of this District.
