Advice to Housewivou.
Britannia should be first rubbed gently
with a woollen cloth and sweet oil, then
washed in warm suds, and rubbed with soft
leather and whiting. Thus treated, it will

' .first; after it has become inured to the heat,
it is not likely to crack.
It is a good plan to put new earthen ware
into water, and let it heat gradually until it
boils?then cool again. Drown earthenware,

rin while it is boiling will preserve the glazing
eojhat it will not be destroyed by acid

leamboat captain from the State of Maine, ]

on to "down east," and pinned him up in
;ood style. It seems the fellow laid a trav- 1

to the clerk that lie had paid but lost

"Whom did you pay?" said the clerk. |
lie rather guessed it was (lie Captain ; so i

"Oil, yes, yes,"said Capt.K., "it appears

" Yes," says the Diddler, "I did."
"And I gave you your change in half
lollars, didn't 1 ? "
(Ihe f-ire was only a half a dollar?competition

" Very well," says Capt. K., " T won't dispute
your word for anything*?hut if you
please, I should like to see the halves!"
The fellow was tripped when he least expected
it. lie could not producc the halves,
uid had to fork over his fare.
A SOI.DIKK, many years ago, was sentenced,
for deserting, to have his ears cut oil'.
After undergoing the brutal ordeal, he was
'scorted out of tlie court-yard to the tune of
tlie rogue's march. lie then turned, and in
inock dignity thus addressed the musicians:
