LOCKHART JUNCTION
l/ockhart Junction, March 21.?
Well, we have had a shower of rain
and it was very acceptable to the
farmers as the red land was pettinp
hard and it was pood for the small
prain. Some wheat is prowinp and
lookinp fine in places and since the
warm weather has set in, I am in
hopes there will be a larpe yield made.
I read where the Germans have
reached Odessa; this is a preat place
on the Hlack Sea and a preat apricultural
section which the Teutons
will have free access to vast stores
of wheat by which the Germans can be
fed. Now people, as farmers we should
look well to our interest this year and
let's nil try to make all the food
stuff we can, so we can be able to
have plenty for ourselves and some of
it to send the soldiers. Now, it does
seem to me that we are up apainst
one of the most strenuous times we
have ever seen. There are many
overtaxinp burdens and it does seem
that a preat many people yet do not
realize it; we do not know what is
cominp, we cannot tell when this war
is poinp to end, the nations of the
world today are in a wranple to make
plain that it is about the way it is. I
heard two soldiers say that there was
poinp to be a preat battle foupht in
the near future and thohsands of soldiers
will be slain and the allies will
march from France to Germany and
capture and kill the Germans as they
po, which will wind up the war in
favor of the allies. T sincerely hope
this prophecy will be true. 1 look at
it this way, there is a just God that
rules over the destiny of nations that
will help fipht our battles for us and
if the people of our preat nation would
concentrate their prayers as one prayer
God mipht save us from any more
blood shod. We are livinp in a very
serious time and many a younp man
has been called from here, leavinp
dear mother, father, sister, brother,
sweetheart, thalt this country may
forever maintain her freedom. I heard
a dear boy remark that he had just as
g well be a young man to go as any
other mother's son. This was well
considered by him. I say this to the
boys. May the Good Lord give you
strength to win the fight for remember
you are fighting for the right.
May your brave hearts never fear for
fif angels spirits hover near. For the
safety of our soldiers we should all
pray that God should guide and keep
them safely through the fight of this
battle for the right and to make the
world safe for democracy.
I met a young soldier the other day
in Jonesville?a nice young man; he
was kind and courteous and talked to
me. He soon found I was in sympathy
with the soldier boys and he seemed
to be more and more social to me. He
gave me his name and his company
and he is 1st Sergeant George Poland,
Co. E, 52nd Pioneers, Camp Wadsworth,
Spartanburg. He was on a
furlough and was visiting some
friends at Jonesville. He was loud
in praise of the hospitality of the people
of Jonesville and Union Counry?said
he would never forget them. I
promised to send him a copy of The
Times and he is going to send it to
New York State where he came from.
I liked this young soldier very much.
It pays to be kind and courteous.
I attended the plav at Jonesville
Friday night which was given by the
young girls and boys and gotten up
by the U. D. C. Mrs. Geer was the
leading character on the program and
deserves much credit for the success
of the evening. There was a full house
and every one seemed pleased to be
there.
I went, to the Elford Grove box supper
on Saturday night and must boost
the people for they had the largest
crowd that T have seen at that place
and I will say without flattering that
1 have hardly seen as many beautiful
boxes and pretty girls anywhere before.
The girls sure went to a deal of
expense to trim their boxes and they
looked pretty enough to buy and keep

Loyalty of American Labor
The resolutions passed on Washing|
ton's birthday by the American Alliance
for Labor and Democracy have
the patriotic ring.
With a preamble briefly stating the
real issue of this war and reciting
America's traditional stand for democracy
and freedom, which tradition
has always been upheld by American
labor, the resolutions declare steadfast
loyalty to America's enlightened
( cause and recognize that this great
( struggle is essentially labor's war.
American workingmen can not dis|
cuss international or other questions
with enemy nations so long as they
' remain autocratic, say the resolutions,
' and the alliance is one with the whole
people of America in their purpose to
exert every effort to bring about the
| final overflow of autocracy and guard
( jealously our own democratic institutions
at home.
