Dr. Rice has many friends, both white and colored in the county who have been very much interested in him and they will be pleased to hear that he is holding out well. Mrs. Wakefield 111 Mrs. W. D. Wakefield was carried to Steedley's hospital in Spartanburg Monday afternoon for an operation. She was taken suddenly ill Saturday evening but improved Sunday and attended church, but developments on Monday necessitated the operation and it was thought advisable to leave at once. Mr. Wakefield phoned friends this morning that she would be operated on today at ten o'cleck and the friends of both of them anxiously await news from her bedside. I Beautiful and Impressive Ceremony Grace Methodist church held a service Sunday evening for the absent soldier boys and the service was both impressive and very beautiful. Rev. J. W. Speake, pastor of the church read the names of their boys entitled to a star on the Service Flag and offered a prayer for their safe return to their homes and families. In the Service Flag which they propose hanging up in the church building, will be found eighteen or twenty stars telling of that many of their boys who are with the colors. Sawyer is an alumnus of the University of South Carolina and received his commission at the second training camp at Fort Oglethorpe.
