Secretary Baker Says America is
Fighting for Priceless Principles
and Will Not Cease Till Victory

Richmond, Va., Dec. 5.?Secretary
of War Newton D. Baker made the
opening address in Richmond tonight
of a series of war conferences to he
? held in every State in the Union
within the next few months at which
speeches will be delivered by members
of the cabinet and other prominent
men to tell the people about the
war. He was given a military escort
to the governor's mansion when he
reached Richmond from Camp Lee
late this afternoon, where he had reviewed
the entire SOth division, and
from the mansion to the city auditorium,
where he addressed an enthusiastic
audience of more than o.OOO
men and women, more than 2,000 others
having been turned away.

protection of "priceless principles"
upon which the United States was
founded, rather than become the vasIsal
of the imperial German government,

To Add More Trains
On account of heavy travel to Spartanburg,
passenger olheials of the
Southern road have arranged to operate
additional trains to take care of
the unprecedented business that is expected
during the hodilay season.
W. E. McGee, division passenger
agent of the Southern, with head<iuarIters
in Columbia, was in the city yesterday
conferring with R. C. Corner,
city passenger agent, relative to increased
passenger service.
Mr. McGee announced that,- beginning
December 15th and up to January
4th, the Carolina Special will be
operated in two sections between
Asheville and Charleston. Roth sections
will carry day caches and baggage
cars, and will be operated on
I time, irrespective of through trains.
Ample provision has been mafic for
the handling of the increased passenger
business into Spartanburg from
New York state, for about the middle
of Oecerfber trains No. 37 and
38, between Greenville, Washington
and New York be operated in
three sections i> tc id ? r two as at
present.
Then Greenville and W .shington
sections is to serve exclusively Spartanburg
and Greenville. Additional
Pullman and day coaches will be on
all through trains and local trains
during the holidays.
Since the New York troops came
to Camp Wadsworth travel from New
York state to this city has been exceedingly
heavy. The Southern is
now operating No. 37 and 28 in twe
sections, but these are not sufficient tc

of Union, S. C., now met and in
sessions and by authority of the same:
Section 1. That Sections Thirtyfive
(35), Thirty-Six (36), ThirtySeven
(37), Thirty-Eight (3S), and
Thirty-Nine (30) of Chapter Three
(3) Revised Ordinances 1016, Relating
to Diquors, Beer, Near-Beer and
Drugs, be amended and are hereby
amended by striking out of said sections
wherever occurring the words *
and figures: "One (1) Gallon" and
inserting in lieu thereof the words
and figures "One (1) Quart," so that
when so amended the reading will he *
changed from one (1) gallon to one
(1) quart.
