( By Associated Press) Copenhagen, Oct. lti.(Correspondence)?Piediction of a more serious condition in the near future as affecting Denmark's supply of fuel, raw materials for industry ami fodder stuffs is made by the National Bank of Denmark in a summary of the economic and financial situation in this country. "In the latter half of the year," says the report, "owing to the Germati U-boat war, navigation met with such dangers as to become practically a gamble in which the stakes were life ami property. Part of the navigation stopped altogether and imports were very considerably restricted, partly by destruction or seizure of cargoes, partly by refusal of exports to Denmark by the belligerent powers, conditions accentuated by the.entrance of the United States into the war. "Denmark's trade balance during the war has been good. Our agriculture and navigation have earned profits which have more than covered the expenditure, and our exports have exceeded our imports. We have, therefore, been able to pay our foreign debts and we have great outstanding debts abroad in bills, in j credits and in foreign securities. This j is all very well, but it would have | been more fortunate if for part of the j profits we had been able to obtain the articles which we want, and which are j now more urgently needed than ever ! before. As is well known, this has j not been possible. We have not been j masters in our own hniKo mo imports, nor even as regards exports. Only when it was absolutely necessary have the latter been stopped, for export prohibition always impairs one group of home interests and exposes lis to the risk of further restrictions of the import of articles in which the shortage may be even more fatal. Important political considerations also come into play here. "The general level of prices has been raised in Denmark and Sweden by aO per cent, in Norway by more than 75 per cent, and in England by about 100 per cent." To Debtors and Creditors. (By Associated Press) Amsterdam, October l<>.?Substitutes for textiles and food stuffs constituted an important feature of the recent autumn fair at Leipsig, Germany, according to the Schlesische Zeitung. "The food stuff industry shown at the fair which might be better described as a "substitutes industry" still is in the development stage," says the paper, "but it already has given such strong proofs of the justification of its existence that it deserves the grcatcs encouragement on the part of the authorities. The true value of the substitutes for tea, coffee, oil, tobacco, soup flavorings, meat extracts and vegetable soups will only be realized after the war if the too numerous regulations are rescinded and good raw material is available. "In the paper section there were exhibited manufactured articles which had attained a surprising decree of success. To a certain extent it was difficult to distinguish table-cloths, napkins, aprons, hat ribbons and even petticoats, for the manuufacturer of which paper had been chiefly employed, from similar articles made of the real material. "The general characteristics of the Seventh War Fair was the want of goods. This was due to dearth of raw materials and shortage of labor. NOTICE OF SALE. A. for its war work in a great campaign to be conducted from November 11 to 19 is required for American soldiers and sailors in the camps in this country, only one-third of the total is for this purpose. The other twothirds is for work across the seas. This overseas progam is very largely designed to serve the America.) j fighting men who will pour into | '.France in great numbers within the I next few months. For Expansion 3,952,000 j Total . _ ... $35,000,000 j When it is realized that there arc ! now 1 1,090,000 men under arms in the nations of the allies and there arc j 0,000.000 more in prison camps who! should be reached by "Y" War Work, it is evident that the budget is most ! reasonable. This work is now in progress in j nearly 600 buildings and tents in the1 United States military camps and naval bases. It is being carried on in 234 different localities. It is being manned by more than 2,000 secretaries. When the soldiers now in the national guard and national army training camps begin to move overseas to France during the months immediately ahead, this work must go with them, but neither the men or the equipment now being used in America can be spared for this requirement, for the camps here will oe immediately refilled with men of he second and third drafts. It means that the work must be enlarged to take care of the expeditionary forces. France's armies .standing as they have, the brunt of the war. are in (lire need of this sort of -service, arid yet if it is provided them it musi^e with men and money from Amnyf# Italy has just invited the Y. M. C. A. War Work Council to establish 1,000 stations among her troops. Russia's need is greatest of all. Her millions struggling to perfect a new democratic government and trying to resist the insidious German propoganda, can he strengthened and held firm through the agency of the Y. M. C. A. better, perhaps, than any other. The prisoners of war have no other means by which their great needs can be met. So it is to grasp this opportunity which demands 4,f?00 more men and hundreds of buildings within the next few months, as well as to maintain the work now under way, that the Association is making its appeal. Dining cars have been provided with basket trays and the waiters pass through the coaches announcing "Sandwiches and ColTee!" The sandwiches are wrapped in sanitary pr.ckages. Moderate prices for this service will be charged. In order to cooperate with the United States Food Administration, the Southern's dining car service is observing Tuesday of every week as "hcefiess" day.
