W. Scott, president of the convention, presided and H. Henry Ilanies was elected secretary. The convention was opened by W. H. S. Harris, who also made an address, followed l?y I'rof. (iuess, John Cunningham, M. C. Gault and others all choosing their own subjects. A recess of an hour was taken which was {riven up to enjoying a fine dinner. The table was spread in the grove and there was an abundance of everything good. In the afternoon Dr. J. S. Thrasher, Thomas Core, Rev. W. B. Justus spoke. The new plan of giving each speaker the privilege of chosing his own subject is a good one. The Sunday school cause is well worked in this district. We have had three light frosts which has nipped the cotton and potato vines but only to do good. The weather at this time is ideal?Indian summer. The cotton market is hanging round the 28-cent mark?a fancy price for the staple. Some of it is being held for JO cents. Betsy Fa it, one of the old time slaves, died at her home near Jones ville Saturday and was buried at the cemetery here Sunday. Betsey deserves more than mere mention for _ lior good life in the world. She was 10~> years old and belonged in slave- ^ ry times to Mr. Hamper Farr. She was loyal and faithful when a slave and she remained so after emanci- ( pation. She joined the Methodist church at the old Maple Ridge shortly ( after the war and lived ever after- f wards a consistent member and last Saturday went up on high to take the seat prepared for her by the Father. ( Joe Fowler, better known as Joe | Milligan, a colored man about TO years of age, died at his home here a few s days since. Joe was peaceable and quiet and worked industriously for a j living; he was well thought of by the white as well as colored people. And still another one of the old crowd as j they are called, passed away near here. Dave Hughes, about 77 years , of age. Dave and I were near the same age and grew up in the same neighborhood, wrestled and scuffled together many times. Dave was a blacksmith and worked for an hon- s est living. ' The sons of Mr. W. A.
