FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1!>17.
Some time ago we advised the farm
ors to hold their cotton for a pood
price. We advise the same thinp now.
If you owe money, take your cotton
to the bonded warehouse here and pet
certificates for it; take your certificates
to the bank and pet what money
you must have. Pay your debts and
wait. No man can be sure of what
cotton will do. but every indication is
that it will brinp a much hipher price.
The present price of cotton is poou.
There are many reasons for supposinp
that it will po hipher later on.
If you owe money, sell, or put your
cotton in the warehouse and pay up.
You will feel better and you will be
safe and secure. If then you wish to
hold for 30 cents, po to it! There is
every reason for believinp that cotton
will ?0 there by or before next spring.
Some predict that it will go much
higher.
The absurd report, put out by enemies
of our country, that the govern
ment intended to commandeer the
pantry supplies, taking over the contents
to the use of the government
is as absurd as it is false. It was a
report circulated to hinder our good
wo.nen in their effort to conserve food. 1
But it will not accomplish its purpose.
Even if it were true?if the
government did do such a thing under
the stern demands of an intolerable
situation, the women of America
would gladly cooperate. Anyway,
Union county women would do that
very thing, we feel cjuite sure.
YOUNG MAN, BUY LAND.
We are not in the real estate business,
not at this time nor at any
previous time. Nor do we anticipate
going into any sort or phase of the
real estate business. Wo can, there- (
fore, write what we will say below
without any apology and without any ,
ulterior motive.
We say to the young men of Union
and Union county: Buy land; buy ;
and build a home. There has never i
been a time in the history of this '
country when such flattering prospects
presented themselves to the small
farmer. There is not much hope for 1
the big landed estate; the owner of '
vast acres is faced with too serious a
condition in the matter of labor. But
to the young man, willing to work .
and with ordinary intelligence, the
opening is most attractive. For the
next five years everything that can
he raised on the farm promises to
bring good prices. A man can buy a
fifty-acre farm in Union county and,
if he manages wisely, he can pay for
it in three years or even less, and at
the sam etime get his living from the
land. We know of one small farm
this year whose owner will clear
enough to pay back twice over the
purchase price. It is a veritable wideopen
opportunity to the man who is
willing to try. Hard work? Yes,
plenty of it; so is working in the mill,
clerking in a store or working on the
railroad. Each of these occupations
work longer hours and have less of
freedom and less of good prospects
than those presented by the farm.
And farm lands in Union county are
to be purchased at astonishingly low
prices today. In less than five years
the prices of today will double. This
s no foolish prediction; it is a prophesy
that we would be willing to
stake our reuptation upon. Young
man, buy a small farm. Get out on
it, and go to work. You will be glad
you did this if you live five years
more on the earth.
COMFORT BAGS FOR THE BOYS.
The Union County Equal Suffrage
league packed a shipment of comfort
bags for the soldiers and sent them to
Atlanta for foreign shipment. The
bags were khaki colored, with the
United States flag on the back and
contained soap, tooth brush, foot ease,
vaseline, new skin, wash rags, chewing
gum, handkerchiefs, socks, tooth
paste, kodak films, games, needles,
pins, bachelor buttons, chocolate and
many other things too numerous to
mention. It is hoped the boys will
enjoy going inrougn mem ana using
theni as much as the Suffrage league
did making an<l packing them up. The
ladies of Union are having a good time
working for the soldiers and unless a
woman wants to be horribly out of
style, she dare not show her face
without her knitting bag. Grand to be
a soldier of Uncle Sam!
CAPTURE WIRELESS PLANT
IN HEART OF SAN FRANCISCO
San Francisco, Oct. 2.?A wireless
receiving plant, which is believed by
naval ollicers to have been used in
anti-American activities, was seized
by federal officials this afternoon in
the heart of San Francisco.
Edward Abrahamson, a German, in
whose home the plant was found, and
his son, Ray Abrahamson, formerly a
licensed wireless operator, were not to
be found. It was reported the plant
had been used in taking code messages
