Mrs. E. C. Fore arrived Thursday to visit her father, Mr. R. S. Foster, and her sister, Mrs. F. W. Carnell, for some weeks. Mrs. Sallie Hart and Mrs. Eva Ferguson of Anderson, are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Cromer on Malgy^ avenue. Miss Lila Maude Willis returned Monday to her home in Spartanburg after a visit to Rev. and Mrs. George P. White on E. Main street. Dr. F. P. Salley left Wednesday for his former home in Salleys to spend a fortnight before going to Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., for training. Miss Elizabeth Arthur, who has been the guest of Miss Helen Burnett in Spartanburg for several weeks, returned to her home this week. Mrs. D. E. Clement and children have returned to their home in Due West after several weeks' visit to their mother, Mrs. Sarah Clement. Mrs. Clarence Edwards and Mrs. Robert Jenkins and little son, Billy, will leave this week for Clinton to visit friends and relatives for several days. Miss Ruth and Master Ralph Lyhrand have returned to Thornwell orphonagc after a visit to their grandmother, Mrs. J. T. Fowler, on West Main street. Mrs. J. T. Bradley is entertaining a house party this week and among her guests arc Misses Marjorie Bradley of Abbeville and Mary Hill of Cross Hill. Mrs. J. Frost Walker and sons returned Saturday afternoon from Cc iumbia, where they have been for several weeks. Capt. Walker accompanied them home for the week-end. jjL. . tot*. Doctor and Mrs. Jackson entertained a few friends at their home Tuesday evening. Music and conversation was enjoyed for several hours and later on an ice course was served. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Whitaker will leave this week for a fortnight's vacation to be spent in Black Mountain, Mt. Mitchael and other interesting: points in the mountains of North Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. Watland Henderson of Blairs entertained a party of young: people at a camping: trip through the mountains of North Carolina and Miss Mathis of this city was a member of the party. Rev. E. A. Fuller will fill the pulpit of the First Baptist church here Kunday night. There will be no preaching: in that church Sunday morning, Rev. Geo. P. White being: away on his vacation. Mrs. Robert Greer (Eva Bobo) arrived in the city Saturday to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fowler Bobo at Meador. Mr. Greer is stationed at Fort Monroe and Mrs. Greer has been, with him for several months. 1 Mrs. James B. Bailey Undertaking company lost one of their fine grey horses Sunday. The team made Whitmire on Tuesday preceding and this animal got sick and although a good vetinary surgeon attended him, nothing could save him. In reporting the account that occurred last Thursday we' stated that the car being driven by Ed. Bartlett ran into the car. As a matter of fact, the automobile had started across the track, was brought to a stop, and before it could be reversed or get otT the track, was hit by the box car being shifted. WARNING TO REI) CROSS. Woman Posing Without Authority as j Red Cross Agent. E. H. Wells, assistant to the pres- j ident of the American Red Cross, has | telegraphed a warning to R. II. King, South Carolina secretary, advising him to beware of a woman posing without authority as an agent of the Red Cross. The telegram: "Mayor C. E. Brooks of Ilendersonville, N. C., writes, July 1(5 Mrs. II. G. Chapin poses as representative of American Red Cross. Carries letters of introduction signed T. Roosevelt, and uses paper with Red Cross on it. Mrs. Chapin entirely unauthorized. Please be on tbe lookout for her if she comes into your States."? State. ^ , BARRED FROM MAILS. Whole Edition of Florida Newspaper Put Under Ban. Tampa, Fla., July 28.?The entire edition of the Kissimmee Valley Gazette, one of the oldest newspapers in suuin riorum, was barred from the mails today because of an advertisement giving notice of a mass meeting Wednesday night at which the legality of the draft law is to be considered and preparations made to fight it. The Kissimmee postmaster construed the advertisement as treasonable, says a dispatch. ^ DESK AND PRESSES WANTED. The Red Cross chapter needs a desk and a wooden press with shelves for headquarters. The papers and material have to be kept under lock and key. If some kind friend will lend the chapter these things they will be well cared for and greatly appreciated. A large crowd was present, and everything was highly enjoyed except the hot weather. The protracted meeting will begin next Sunday morning. Miss Julia Bishop returned Saturday from a week's visit to relatives near Santuc. Mr. W. Walter Greer and family from Clinton are spending a few days here with relatives. Miss Mary Bishop returned Sunday night from Greenville, where she has been spending part of her vacation with her sister, Mrs. C. A. Granger. M rs. M. G. Crosby from Weadors is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Wilburn. Mr. O. T. Gallman and family from Spartanburg spent last Sunday at the home of Mr. Charles L. Ray. Mr. P. C. Bishop, Jr., went over to Union Sunday night to hear Engineer Fant. speak. Misses Myrtle Crawford and Willie Gallman are visiting friends out here. Mrs .C. I.'. JONESVILLE Jonesville, July 111.?The Civic league gave a reception Friday evening at the Armory in honor of the Coast Artillery, which was altogether a very enjoyable affair. The decorations were beautiful. A splendid program of patriotic songs was rendereu, after which the ladies served a delicious course of ice cream and cake. A large crowd was present and everyone had a real good time. On Saturday evening the ladies sent a picnic lunch over to the camp, which the boys seemed to enjoy very much. A number of the Baptist people of our town attended the Sunday School convention at Lower Fair Forest Sunday. Mr. IJ. P. Mollis of Greenville was a business visitor here Saturday.
