Young Horn was 18 years of age and a good young man. He had typhoid fever and hemorrhages of the lungs. The account given by young Mr. Moore, who has just got out of Berlin, Germany, as a prisoner of war since February last published in the daily papers this week, is very interesting reading and gives things as they are over in the German capital and really it is very familiar to me and reads very much like a nation or government that is on its last legs and is nearing a desperate end. I have seen something like it myself and really it is surprising to see how big men will hang on to a lost cause and hold out a bold front when their doom is so near at hand. The German kaiser had better be preparing for himself a city of refuge for his days as kaiser of Germany are certainly numbered. The reason Germany succeeded so well at the first of the war was because she was ready for the fight at the start while England and France were not ready and little Belgium was too small to even be in the way ?then when England and France did get ready so how the tide turned and now Uncle Sam is coming and things are going much better still. M rs. Woodie Brown and daughter, Miss Carol of Greenwood, and Mrs. Gliphus Bates of Clifton were the quests of Mrs. Sallie Southard last week. Mrs. W. C. Gault in his letter in The Times of last week. Mr. John T. Fowler, who has been quite sick for several weeks and whose life was despaired of, has taken a turn for the better and there is hope now of his recovery. Mr. W. A. McWhirter is about holding his own while this scribe is about the same. Mr. J. F. Alman is some days better and again he is worse. Some of the negroes that have left this neighborhood and gone up North have sent some very flattering tales back about the fine country up in the North. One fellow went up to New York and vleft his wife to follow; has written back for her to come on to New York and spend one day in heaven before the end comes. Well, these emigration spurts have come aloiw this way before but they have aj?t5 acted and the fancy tales have turned and the prodigals have returned. Mrs. S. Haddon Geer and little son, William Munro, have returned from a visit of a month to Mrs. Milton E. Pier of Jersey City while there. Mrs. Pier accompanied them on a number of visits to relatives in New York city, Brookshire, Newark, N. J., Asbury Park, N. J., West Point, N. Y., and to Sharon, Conn. Mrs. Pier is a sister of the late Dr. W. O. Southard and has spent many winters in Jonesville and other parts of the South. Duncan was elected for the next district conference a year hence. The young people have organized a Sunday evening prayer meeting at the Methodist church, to meet at 5 p. m. every Sunday. Mr. John T. Scott lost a fine nilch cow Saturday evening, thought ,o be from eating too much green cane. Mr. J. J. Black has been out with lis separator threshing the wheat rop. The wheat yield is not very arge but the grains are good and will urn out a fair yield of good flour. The growing corn crop is right iromising at this time. Mr. Cit Lancaster from across the 'orest stream is in our town this norning. Mr. Lancaster came over vith one of his sons, who is going up nto North Carolina to take a job on instruction at $3.50 a day. Monday was a bad day on the rops, very dry and windy and the hermometer at 93 decrees. This sort ?f weather wil soon do up the crops. Mr. Conley Kendrick, who has been it work at Florence for some time, ias returned home. The first load of watermelons from ;ho country this season was brought ,o town last Saturday by Mr. Albert lossett.
