We have had a fine rain in this section and ? from what we learn 1 think it has been a general rain throughout the county. The crops are getting a move on them at last. The Fourth of July was enjoyed the same old way, mills closing down, ? giving holiday; also most business " stopped and people took the day go? ing and coming and so on to some f place for recreation and enjoyment. , This writer with the Messrs. Mors gan brothers and sister and little Bes? sic and Clyde Morgan, also Mr. Josh " Osment and Mrs. Kerr, all of Jones? ville, started on the 4th of July for t Chimney Rock, N. C., leaving Jonesr ville at 6 o'clock and arrived in the ? Blue Ridge mountain at 10 o'clock, a distance of about 75 or 80 miles the 1 way we went, first going by Spartan? burg, through the county to Boiling 1 Springs. Next stop was at Mill Springs, where we drank some of r the mountain water, a beautiful spring 3 running out of a rock like a basin ? and round like a pot in the bottom s and cold as ice and clear as crystal. 1 We viewed what was called Oak 1 mountain and went on. Then it be5 gan to rain on us and we stopped 1 again to put up our curtains and r then we were going further through the Blue Ridge mountains looking at many beautiful scenes, going through the mountains, thinking about getting to Chimney Rock, the place we startI ed from home to see, looking and , viewing as we went through the moun tains. We saw many fine pear and 1 apple orchards, viewing also the beau, tiful corn growing down in the vallev - or cave bottom land. This was very , pretty to look at. It did me Rood to - see the corn growing when I know it [, is so much needed. Sometimes we !, would find ourselves going down i through the mountain, saying or - thinking that there would be no one , living down that way, but we did not - go far before we saw a fine residence, 1 a two-story building, good barns and - often we would see a crib half full , of corn. We did not get to Chimney I, Rock on the 4th; we stopped three 3 miles this side on what was called - the cane creek section, where there is i, a nice church and a large cemetery, i We put up a monument to Mrs. More gan's grave at this church. Near this - place we stopped at the home of Mr. e Jacy Sercy and put our auto under - the shelter for it was raining at this , time and at this stop we took lunch l and after a few hours rest we took l a tramp through the mountains to r the home of Mr. Nix. There some of , the party went to other places to r spend the night and left me at Mr. , Nix's and he showed me around. He . first took me down near his home to r show me where the great rocks came , rolling down from the mountains into , the branches during the great rains , nTHT-flofrts- they'Tia , was a show to me to see the rocks that had rolled miles away down from the mountain top, ruining a great deal of fine bottom lnrwl TUT- xt;.. ..v.. mi. mx snowed me an old site where his barn stood. There were a few scattered pieces of lumber laying around. He told me the great rocks and water knocked : down his barn and killed two of his mules. Others suffered losses all along through this section. We were * delighted with the kind hospitality * shown us by Mr. and Mrs. Nix; also < Mr. and Mrs. Sercy and Mr. Burgess. ^ I felt like I was with home folks while f I was with these good people. Next v morning we finished our trip to Chim- a ney Rock. This place is in the heart t of the Blue Ridge and is a beautiful place. It has just been rendered ac- 0 cessible by the Chimney Rock high- w way, a superb double track scenic ? auto road actually to the base of the chimney. This road is three miles a long, IS feet wide, four to seven per tc cent grade with two per cent grade on hair pin curves with diameters tl of To feet, the whole sanded through. l( This place has been provided for large lumber of automobiles. Appian Vay, a remarkable bench on the face Ce f the precipice nearly a mile in toi ngth and extending from Chimney ,ock to the Hickory Nut Falls, along sp< hich are the Wild Cat Trap, Ground an* log Slide, Inspiration Point, Naire's Shower Bath and numerous ives and grottos and tier upon tier Cj beautiful mountains.
