Jackson, was sent home dead from the army in Fort Rengold, Texas. Young Mr. Jackson enlisted about three months ago in the field artillery and had written several letters home in I praise of army life, lie died at his 1 post of duty, only being ill for a few i hours. Young Mr. Jackson had a pro- j motion a few weeks ago from private I to a non commissioned officer. Cotton generally is very broken stands and some farmers arc replanting some of their lands. We need a warm rain just now very much. Gardens are late but they are doing fairly well and the pood women will soon have plenty of beans, potatoes ind cabbage on their tables. There are still many cases of measles on the Ridge but I haven't lieard of any death from them in our . ommunity. Miss Cyntha Comer, an old lady, is 'ritically ill at this writing and is not jxpected to live. She has appendicitis ind she s too old and feeble to stand in operation, so says the doctor. Mr. Daniel Garner is able to be up igain but is very feeble. Mr. Arthur Gault, the rural mail arriers on Kelton Route No. 1 made i trip to Spartanburg last Saturday jvening in his car after carrying the nail on his route. Mr. J. M. Little, Sr., has bought i new Ford car. The cars are getting iretty thick on the Ridge. I guess I vill have to buy one. One drawback vith me would be I would have to build i car house on the nublic road a half nile from my home as I can't get here with one. I had a call for a loctor recently and from his charge vhich was very reasonable from the -oad he had to travel over. If I have o have many calls I will be like my dd friend, Henry R. Fowler, when he ;ettled with his doctor. He said, "Docor, isn't that mighty steep?" The loctor (who was an Irishman) reilied, "But, oh, Mr. Fowler, see those errible draw bars." It was before dock law. Mr. Fowler said he had hose bars put in order at once, so I vill have my road worked. Times get harder all the time and he government keeps calling on us to economize and then that lady speaker ,vho spoke at Union recently called on lie good women to save everything, vaste nothing and if they keep on adising Mrs. G. T. Mr. William Fm;r died last week from typhoid fever and was buried at 1'oster chapel. The funeral services were conducted by the Revs. J. D. Croft of Kelton and Brown of Monarch. Union. There was a verv lnrrra _ :rowd of sorrowing relatives and friends. He leaves a wife, who was a ^ Miss Holcomb before her marriage, * two children, many relatives and " friends to mourn his death. Miss Green is an exceptionally pood teacher, and oeservedly popular. During her stay ^ iere, by her charming manners and *weet disposition she has endeared s aerself to every one, and it is genu- s inely regretted that this action removes her from our midst, though she 'arries with her the very best wishes ef a host of admiring friends and ac piaintances. She will be missed in t the school room, in the homes, on the n streets, in church and in the Sunday s chool, where she-has a class of young men numbering about 25, whom she las taught continuously for four years, v and it is with much reluctance that they give her up. Miss Gertrude Sumner, an industrious operative in the cloth Toom, met with a very painful, if not serious, accident last Friday morning while performing her duties as a cloth inspector.
