KNOXYILLE BOARD OF TRADE.
Knoxville, Term., March f'.O, 1917.
News I )epart mont.
Union Times,
Union, S. C.
Gentlemen:
Press dispatches indicate President
Wilson has accepted offer of Knoxville
Board of Commerce to make tis Trade
Trip to he run week of April 9th a
tour of apnlicd preparedness and patriotism.
The offer was made the government
owing to the serious situation
now confronting the nation. The trip

............ OVJ1V.
A "Colonel" will "command" the expedition
and each department will be
in charge of a "Captain." The Colonel's
"staff" will be called the "Staff
Council" and will settle all questions
pertaining to trip. Colonel 1.. I). Tyson,
who commanded the Sixth Immunes
U. S. Volunteer Infantry in the
Spanish-American war, has been
designated "Colonel" of the "Preparedness
Expedition." He will leave for
Washington at once to confer with the
President and Secretary of War to ascertain
in just what manner the trip
may be conducted to best further the
preparedness movement. Tennessee
furnished G.r>00 men in the SpanishAmerican
War, more than GO per cent
enlisting from Ivnoxville and East
Tennessee. Out of the 2700 which
Tennessee sent to the border last summer,
practically GO per cent were from
this section, while during the last nine
years the Federal Recruiting Officer
reports nearly G.000 men enlisting
from Knoxville and East Tennessee,
representing over Go per cent of the
total enlistment for the State during
that period. The Second Congressional
District, of which Knoxville is the
center, sent more men to the SpanishAmerican
War than any other Congressional
Distvict in the country,
with the exception of the District in
which New York city is situated.
Hence the appellation of Tennessee as
the "Volunteer State." The "Preparedness
Expedition" will be made in a
special train and will reach Union on
I Wednesday, April llth, at 5:15 p. m.,
remaining there until 5-30 p. m. same
day. Will personally 'appreciate your
use of this story, sent at request of
Knoxville business men.
Yours truly,
Wiley It. Morgan,
Managing Editor Knoxville Sentinel.
