In travelling through the , country Sunday to Klbethel about 12 > miles, I didn't see a sprig of turnip salad nor even any small grain except one small field of oats that were , drilled. Mr. N. B. Eison told me today he was selling some shellots. Most of our school teachers went to Union Saturday. ( Most of the bosses of the Wallace mills went to Greenville Saturday to ( attend a textile meeting of mill men. Last Saturday N. B. Blackwood, ] Bud Vaughan, Elezer Mabry, Gill i r owier, T. A. Littlejohn, Munro Whitlock, Coleman Fowler, John McKin- , ney, Ed Jeter, Sam Gallman and M. C. Gault from the country were all in j Jonesville. { Our company of Coast Artillery here is expecting to be called into ser- j vice before long. The arming of our merchant ships , is sure to put us into war with Ger- i many. God made the high seas for . the benefit of all the world and for ( Germany to forbid the use of the seas to any nation or country is the over- , bearing and high-handed move to be thought of. Mr. W. Ij. Goudelock of Cherokee county died at the home of his daugh- ! ter, Mrs. Dr. Tate, at Trough Shoais i last Saturday morning and the re- 1 mains were buried at Elbethel church i Sunday evening. The services were conducted by his pasotr, Rev. F. C. Hiekson. Many relatives and friends were present to pay their last sad rites to the dead. Mr. Goudelock was the last member of a large and prominent family of old Union county. Mr. Goudelock and I were members of the same regiment, the 18th S. C. V., in i the late War Ret ween the States and 1 I therefore knew him well as a soldier * ?his record was that of a good, brave 1 and faithful soldier and I give as evi dence of this besides my own personal ( knowledge his promotion in his regiment from private to sergeant and then to lieutenant, to adjutant and to adjutant general, also to the appointment of judge advocate of a :ourt mar- I tial. All these promotions came above his fellows as a recognition of his bravery and ability. I serevd him as his clerk of the court martial and our associations were of the most pleasant kind. He was a Mason and a member of Elbethel church most of his long life, folding offices in both these. He was dangerously wounded in the trenches at Petersburg in July. 1864, his wound was in the neck and it came very near being fatal. I was at the time acting hospital steward in Petersburg and I assisted in dressing his wound. Mr. Goudelock was 84 years of age last January and for all these long yearg there was no better hus^ band, father, frtenil, TteTgnuor, souiivr, 1 ? church member and Christian gentleman than William Lipscomb Goude. lock.
