They were Wm. C. Comer Wm. W. Tracy, Mrs. Rebecca Mc Daniel and Miss Eliabeth Charles. Mr Tracy, a Veteran of the late war, i good soldier and a good christian mar in whom there was no guile. Mr Comer was not quite old enough foi service in the war. He was a good quiet citizen and died as he had lived Miss Charles was good and clever anc full of good deeds, while Mrs. McDaniel was made a widow at the U?Ul? ~ r i-U a A t uaiuc ui me cruiur near I'etersDUrg, Va., on the 20th of July, 1864, her husband, John McDaniel, being beater to death by Yankee soldiers with th? butts of their guns. The good soldier died in defence of his wife and children and for his country and while 1 mention this sad event of his death 1 am reminded of something that occurred in his life that was a little funny. Just before the second battle of Manassas I had been home on furlough and had gone on to Richmond to join my command, which was up towards Manassas and at Richmond I joined in with John Wheeler Foster, John Lipsey, John Willard and John McDaniel and these four Johns and I made up a jolly crowd of what was called stragglers. The railroads were torn up and the country laid waste by the army and we had to make our way on foot and get something to eat as best we could. One day we drew near a farmer's home and the man was n the yard under an apple tree beating apples and pressing cider and his wife was also in the yard churning and we turned in and went up to the house and asked the man if we could get some cider and he said, "Yes. as soon as he pressed it." We then asked the good wife if we could get some buttermilk and she replied in the affirmative. We also asked if she coufd let us have some bread to go along with the milk and she answered, "Yes. jut you must wait until T cook it," ind we aprced to do all this and sat lown and waited with keen appetites, rhe churninp done, the woman cooked i larpe cake of coi n bread and cut into five equal part? and put it into our mvorsaok. pot all the cider we could Irink, tilled our canteens with buttermilk, paid our bill and left. We soon \ame to a rock fence and all sat down to eat and such another feast of hot :orn bread and buttermilk and when ive started to pet up to move on John VIcDaniel had eaten so much he ouldn't make it and he had to be lelped up and piven a start and he toon pot all ripht. A day or two later ve had pot very hunpry and we came ip to an old dwellinp that was abanloned and we concluded to camp in it or the nipht. I mention this to show our aoys who may chance to read it what war life is before they have to meet the German soldiers down on the border. If Mexico accepts Germany's offer and forms alliance with her it is vorv probable that our povernment. will have to fipht them on the border. Many times have I seen our Confederate soldiers while in the trenches draw a day's rations, sit down and eat it all at one meal and then sinp and he lively.
