KELTON ti Kelton, Jan. 29.?It is raining this . morning. The farmers have done little work this month, hut wp will hnvo hot. ? ter weather for farm work by and by. I went to Jonesville Saturday; the roads were not as bad as I expected to find them. It is all folly talking about good roads in the winter and voting bonds to build and maintain them. I q haven't been to Union lately, but they ^ tell me the streets are bad and I s know that the streets in Jonesville in j, some places were as bad as any place I travelled over between Kelton and c Jonesville; certainly at one place. u If the towns and cities can't have good streets in bad weather how in the j| name of common sense can we expect ^ to have good roads in the country in t tVlO winfnr tirkan ~ ^ ?..w *f XlVVt TTIIVII 1IUIIUICUS Uf IIIUCS y are to be kept up. I feel like Mr. e George Bonner of Spartanburg said n when the roads are too bad to travel 3 stay at home until you can travel over ? them and let all vehicles stay under the sheds and let the farmers raise r what they need and not all cotton and j stop buying so much fertilizers and v improve their lands by planting crops that will improve them better. I take this means of thanking Mr. j B. F. Arthur of Winchester, Va., for a ' folder and a kind invitation to visit * that city and GeVfysburg if I attended the reunion of the grays and blues / at Washington next spring. I would " he more than pleased to take a side trip to those cities if I attend the 1 meeting. T'JV I was sorry to hear of the death of g Rev. John B. Wilson of the South Carolina Conference. He preached to the people of Jonesville circuit in the seventies and was a very able minister and loved by many people of Union p county. This humble scribe gave him v his hand as a token of his desire to be r> a member of the Methodist church at I Flat Rock church Oct. 21, 1873, and and he has always had ffreat faith in the man as a true and faithful man a of God. y d Mr. Dan Gallman is in the hospital h at Chester and has had an operation. 1 Thfi Iflfit. This war in Europe puts things In such uncertainty that no man can foresee tho future with any degree of clearness. The sure and certain increase in cotton acreage meuns lower cotton prices next fall. Cost of all food and grain products is high, so high that no 0:10 can afford to buy and expect to pay out with cotton. It's a time above all others to play safe; to produce all possible food, grain and for&ge supplies on your own acres; to cut down the store bill. A good pieco of garden ground, rightly planted, rightly tended and kept planted the year round, can be made to pay half your living. It will save you more money than you made on the best five acres of cotton you ever grew!
