The local cotton market in Union
Thursday was 17^4 cents. This is
quite a drop from 20 cents the pound.

Claus will be on hand. This will be
pood news to all the little folk.

ever pot money for nothinp.
A fine array of jups are daily arrivinp
by express these days. It is to
be hoped that no little children will
be deprived of a visit from Santa
Claus because of papa's jup.
And so, Villa threatens to eat up
the inhabitants alonp the Mexican
border? We have for some time seriously
doubted if Villa ever heard of
many of the threats said to eminate
from him.
Perhaps our merchants need to be
informed upon one requirement of the
insurance companies: If you have
"fireworks" on sale in your store
without a special permit, and should,
in the meantime have a fire, your insurance
is void. You could not collect
a cent of the insurance!
Ix J. Hames, one of Union's enterprising
wholesale grocerymen, furnished
us with a sample package of
"Yam Nuts," a breakfast food manufactured
from sweet potatoes. The
concern that manufactures this preparation
is located in Greenville, and is
capitalized at a large figure. The
"food" is quite palatable.

We respectfully suggest that you
read the advertisements we are carrying.
The Union merchants will sell
you goods at as reasonable prices as
you will find anywhere. And when
you trade with Union merchants you
are building up your own town. Don't
forget the fact that when you spend
money in the other man's town you
are sending the commercial blood
away from your own community.
Peace prospects for Europe may be
better at this time than at any time
since the beginning of the great war,
but that is about all that can be said.
No one believes that the terms proposed
by Germany will be accepted
by the allies. Indeed, to do so would
but give to Germany complete victory.
We believe the only result of the proposal
from Germany will be to quicken
the war pulse of the allies.
We have been investigating the
prices charged by Union merchants
and those charged by out-of-town merchants,
and the comparison is no discredit
to the merchants of Union. It
will pay you to buy from your Union
merchants. The prices are more reasonable,
and you keep the money at
home. In fact, some of the money you
spend here will find its way back into
your pocket. You buy a suit of clothes
from a Union merchant; he buys a
cord of wood from you?some of your
money gets back to you before you ran

"OLD SCROOGE."
As is our custom, we beg to pay
our respects to "Old Scrooge," an evil
minded, sordid crook, who periodically
makes his appearance just before
Christmas each year. This old "killjoy"
is a deep-dyed villian, and he is usually
a liar, although he would not
own it to save your life.
The joy of Christmas is destroyed
for many little folk by the constant
mouthings of this old fellow. It is too
had that it should be so. Especially
when we know that most children,
when a little planning is used, can he
made happy with small outlay of money.
It is not the value that counts
most hut the spirit and the wise planning.
If the busy man of the family will
give just a small amount of thought
to the happiness of his children, he
will not only confer a blessing upon
them, hut he will find a happiness for
himself that he has missed lo! these
many years.
