I tried some for about a year, and then failed, but how about many others? "Uncle Zeke" says, "It's hard ter b'lieve sum men are bigger fools than they look." When I was a little boy, why the teacher made me spell such a word as incomprehensibility was beyond my incomprehensibility. Mr. Curtis Gregory, who has been at Macfeat's Business College sometime, spent Thanksgiving day with his pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. ,J. W. Gregory, Sr. Mr. Manning Jeter, a Furnian student spent the week-end with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. T. Jeter, and was accompanied l>y a fellow student, Mr. Wood, of Laurens. The boys of the First repiment, from this county (and elsewhere) will soon be at home. There are two from this place, Messrs. Ryan Jeter and Harry Jones. Mr. Jeter enlisted with the Butler Guards of Greenville, and Mr. Jones with the Johnson Rifles of Union. The new Methodist preacher, Rev. R. L. Domett, preached his first sermon here Sunday, his text beinj* from John 1:38, "What Seek Ye." He made a very favorable impression, and seems to be a very friendly man, desirous of making everybody like him. or rather love him as a friend and pastor, and that he mav therebv be more useful in his calling. Everybody liked his predecessor, Rev. Mr. Boulware, who made friends easily, and the new preacher may win a place as easily, and he as well liked. The cold wave which struck us on Nov. 10th, bringing the first general killing frost and freeze, 20 degrees, proves now to have wrought quite an amount of damage. Many farmers are complaining that the oat crop is about killed, and in that quite an amount of seed wa's lost. Turnips was killed badly, some patches being a complete loss. Cabbage were killed, some as dead as if a fire had been on them. Even the hardy plant, rape, was badly killed off. The weather this year has been abnormal anyway, it seems. After the extreme wet summer, the fall has been so dry it was difficult to plow in oats, what came up was badly winter killed at the very start. There are no winter cover crops, rye would not come up in cotton fields; if a little shower would bring up crimson clover, drought soon killed it. Volunteer bur clover came up and died, and no sown seed would ever start to come up, and there is not a thing to speak of in the gardens. I have noticed that it is of no use to give the average negro a big price for work, as he will waste it and nev.er saves anything. Of all the negroes about here who quit their jobs on the farms, several who had crops, were "croppers," to work on the rebuilding of the dirt dam at Neal Shoals, at from $1.25 to $1.50 a day, few, if any, have saved any money. When they were "fired" they limped back to the farm where they had quit and went to trying to borrow money or take up small jobs. They had no money to pay any debts they had made on the farm. But it is against the principle of many of them to pay a debt, if they can in snyway "beat" you out of it. They quit their farm jobs, and crops to go to the dam, then lost out, and is now drifting back to the farm for shelter and winter firewood. Prices paid by farmers are often sneered at, but the farmer is the only employee who furnishes all fuel free, and that is quite an item. A price of $*1.25 a day ruins a negro for farm work, and few are worth $1.2.r> when he pets it. 1 came near beinp wicked enough to say I wish there would Ke no ;vorc proclamations for a special Thanksgiving day, because it is more often misused, and many .especially the colored folks, think it is for hunting. By the way, I heard such a great lot of shooting, and I believe it was at birds, and the season had not opened for hunting either. It may not have been bird hunting, but it is not once in a lifetime one can hear such shooting at rabbits. The day was very quiet here, but for the hunting I heard. The services I mentioned to be here was held at the Baptist church, and was a small affair, from size, but this may have been the "two or three" the Bible mentioned, a gathering together. Most of the "sheep" may have gone off and jumped into the pen with the "goats," . (using an expression of Kev. Dean Crane) and I wonder if any of them "came home with the very hound butted out of them," as he said again. Hey Denver. WILL OUTLINE PLANS AGAINST COTTON PEST Boll Weevil Conference Will Be Held at Fairfax Dec. 11?To Stage Campaign in Border Counties. (Monday's State) A comprehensive scheme of organization to combat the ravages of the Mexican boll weevil will be worked out at a conference to be held at Fairfax, in Barnwell county, December 11. The conference has been called by W. W. Ix>ng, director of the farm demonstration forces and head of the Clemson college extension work. Mr. Long is proceeding under authority of the South Carolina boll weevil commission, recently returned from a trip through the weevil States of the South. The call for the meeting has been issued to the farmers, ministers, bankers, merchants, professional men and all classes of citizen. The following is the letter which has been sent out: "At a meeting of the South Carolina boll weevil commission held in Columbia, November 23, the extension division of Clemson college, cooperating with the United States department of agriculture, was requested by the commission to represent the commission along with the college and the United States department of ABPrirailtllM in all interests in the State for the coming of the cotton boll weevil. It is our purpose to begin organizing the following border counties: Beaufort, Aiken, Jasper, Hampton, Barnwell, Edgefield and McCormick for the advent of the weevil. You appreciate that the weevil is now very near the South Carolina line. We intend at the outset to centro all of our efforts in the counties that will be first infested. Meet at Fairfax. "We are calling upon all patriotic citizens to give us their cordial cooperation in order that our work may be efficient and effective. To this end we think a conference of all interests should be held. Therefore, I ar.i suggesting a general meeting to be held ht Fairfax, Barnwell county, on December 11, the meeting to begin promptly at 10: JO o'clock. There will be a general meeting held for the purpose of outlining the proper policy and formulating plans for field operations. It is further suggested that after the general meeting is held, that the bankers, who control the capital and credit of their communities, may hold a meeting for the purpose of outlining the policy and the assistance that they may be expected to render under boll weevil conditions, and such other matter as they wish to discuss nertaininc to the boll weevil problem. Specific Policies. "A comprehensive scheme of organization has been worked out and will be submitted at the meeting for amer^ments if it seems wise and for the general approval of that body. This is not a meeting for the purpose of speech making, as definite and specific policies and plans must be | worked out for the instruction and i assistance of the people. "No more important conference has ever been called in the history of the State of South Carolina and I beg that you will give this matter your special attention and be present in order that there may he a general expression of approval of the policies and plans that may be submitted." The boll weevil commission plans to conduct a general educational campaign in the border counties. J. A. Evans, assistant in charge of the United States farm demonstration work, has accepted an invitation to spend at least 10 days in the border counties conferring with the farmers.
