Sl.OO A YKA U # E "WHY UNION COUNTY PEOPLE SHOULD ATTEND THE UNION COUNTY FAIR" The ancient Greeks had the great Olympian games, which, in their infancy, resembles our county fair, and served almost the same purposes, viz., to promote commerce, peace and unity. When the Greeks held these pames they proclaimed a "holy" season, and everyone was expected to attend. These great games helped to unite Greece and brought them to higher civilization. Just as our county fair is meant to unite the people of the county and bring them to greater things. Can you imagine how worthless these games would have been had the people not attended them? It is the same way with our fair. It can't do pood unless you go and are willing to learn. I think it would be time well invested to set as^le the three days of the fair and attend. There is the city who who says, "Well, if the farmer don't attend what is the use of my going? It is his fair and if he don't take enough interest in it to attend why should I?" So you see how mportant it is for the farmer to attend. Then there are the young people who should attend, for it is bere they will see their favorite pure breed live stoc kor poultry; in fact, the "cream" of everything in the county. It will do them "good," and may prove their future success as farmers and business men. Jack Burnett. Sedalia High School. The bes treason I know why Union County people should attend the Union County Fair is because it is the Union County Fair. Next it occurs to me that the Fair Association needs our assistance. For vears these nroirressive jrentlemen nf I the Association have been giving their time and energy to improve conditions throughout the county, and as our town and county is what we make it. If each citizen would give his best *** support to the Fair our county would soon be a credit to the State. For instance, if each lady brought the best of her pantry supplies, fancy and needle work, even a well made button hole, or a neatly darned stocking, not with the desire for a prize, but hoping to inspire some one else to do better work. Then all of your friends are going to be there. Many of them who have moved away are returning for a good time, and an opportunity to renew old acquaintances. Johnnie Crawford. At the Union County Fair, Old Vinson has a Jersey cow, An' she's as fine as silk, She simply breaks the record when It comes to giving milk. An' as for butter, sakes o'lives; Her match ain't anywhere? But what's the use of tellin' this? You'll see her at the Union County Fair. Old Neighbor Haystack has a sow As fine as fine can be, They say she weighs a thousand pounds An' has a pedigree. She has a dozen baby pigs, Plum beauties, I declare, But what's the use of tellin' this? You'll see them at the Union County Fair. Old Bill Stokes, the chicken man, That lives across the way. He has a hen that takes the cake? I>ays once or twice a day. At least that's what Old Billy says, An' Billy wouldn't dare To lie about his hen, because We'll have her at the Union County Fair. Old Farmer Brown has raised so.rr corn, That knocks the record flat, The ear.s are twenty inches long? Well, maybe hardly that. - But, anyway, there ain't no corn Can beat it, anywhere, But what's the use of tellin' this?? You'll see it at the Union County fair. If we are to make Union County South Carolina, the great, rich, romantic land it ought to be the farmer, the hanker, the merchant and the town farm owner must work together by bringing exhibits and attending the Union County Fair. By attending the Fair we inspire the farmers to work together for better crops, more and better livestock and more homeraised foods and feeds. This yearly meeting develops a richer country, a better social life and keener cominanity spirit. The Fair promotes a greater spirit of fraternity and brotherhood and increases the community of interest between the town residents and the country residents. We should attend the Fair because we want to rival in a friendly way -our friends, neighbors and strangers from other communities. If he is 3 made of the right stuff he tries to live up to the blue ribbon in all 1 things; he tries to make all his pro- i ducts as high quality of their kinds as the blue ribbon brand was of its t kind. To encourage r this the getting of the maximum re- \ turns from our lands and the foster- s ing this better type of citizenship be- i comes then our duty to attend the Union County Fair. i Again, we should be patriotic t enough to want to boost anything that c would be for the good of our country. If we do not come to the County Fair t and bring our exhibits and make it t the best Fair ever, should we expect people from other counties to sneak a t word of prasie about our city and t county? By attending the County Fair we ( raise our standard of unity and let i other people know that Union County is a Union indeed?a union of indi- ] viduals and interests. The ladies come and brng their exhibits of fruit, candy, flower and needlework. Many a lonesome woman working away duringthe hot summer days is inspired and encouraged to work on and perfect her s art of canning, embroidering or what- 1 ever it may be she has chosen as her ' handiwork to exhibit at the County 1 Fair. All the ladies meet on the Fair | grounds and discuss how this lovely ' stitch is made, how that jar of pickles ] was made, how these beautiful flow- 1 ers were grown and so on. Therefore ' there is a social side to the Fair also, \ which does many a poor lonesome wo- 1 man's heart good. \ By attending our Fair we are enabled to see what our different schools ' are doing. Almost every school has 1 an exhibit at the Fair. We see just J how much progress our schools are i making, how much more efficient < some schools are than others. We should notice the school exhibits es- i pecially for if our boys and girls are < not educated we are not progressing < but going backward. If you notice t that the school in your community j has not exhibited something you should be all the more determined to urge the teachers and pupils to get some kind of an exhibit rpnHv fnr exhibition by next Fair day. This is < an important reason why you should attend the County Fair for thereby \ you are pushing forward to the i day of consolidated schools and the i time when educated men and educated ,1 women will be the rule and not the exception throughout the length and i breadth of our land. i Then if our boys and girls and 1 fathers and mothers who love Union < county will remember that we need < them all at the Union County Fair to ] encourage our agriculture, which is 1 as everyone knows the basis of our i wealth, to help brighten and encourage those whose duty calls them to a 1 narrow life; to enhance the value of j the products of our lands and brains; ( to make more efficient the laborers i of our county and thereby helping to ] make Union county what nature and j God have intended her to be?the i county with the greatest wealth and i the happiest people?then surely ev- ( eryone will attend our Fair. i Sadie Barnado. 11th Grade. 1. To get together. I think every man, woman and child should make i an effort to attend the Union County Fair. The benefit which they will de- i rive from it is invaluable. 2. Cooperations. To cooperate with each other for the development and i uplift of the county as a whole, viz., for the improvement of agriculture of Union county; for the experience and opinions of each other's experiences of the various implements pertaining to agriculture. Also of the various varieties of farm seeds, etc. i 3. For the raising of improved stock i of various kinds and of poultry. Social Function. To meet our daily friends and associates, renew old acquaintances, form new acquaint- < ances. It makes i everybody take an interest in what i everybody else is doing, and try to 1 do as good or better. If everybody i would try to do better than the other .people and take an interest in what other people of Union County are doing Union county would be a very thriving county. Going to the Fair shows you what IN PR >ther people are doing and have and nakes you take an interest in the :ounty. It shows other people that rou do take an interest in your county. It is the Union County Fair, an ex- , jibition of the products of the county n which you live. Take something to the Fair, do your >est and see if you can't get a blue ( ibbon. It is instructive to grown-ups by , showing them what can be made and aised and done in Union county. It s instructive to children by showing , hem the different thngs raised or i nade in their county. It often shows ( rery old and historical things. It ihows the different kinds of stock aised in Union county. Then the school exhibits are of much nterest to school children. I think the Union county folk should attend the Fair because it makes the people more homogeneous. The more often people meet together the more alike they become. It unites :he people and sections of the county. The people who attend the County Fairs find out what is being done in the other sections of the county. When they understand what is happening in other sections their interests become widened and broadened and they become ambitious. The County Far promotes industry. Those people who attend the Fair see how other people do their work. The farmers get new ideas about agriculture. The merchants see new geoefcs displayed in the shop. Whenever and wherever people meet together ideas are exchanged :ustoms are adopted. The people become more interested in one another and whenever we find such a state of affairs we also find progress. Ola Coleman'. Jonesville High School. There are many reason why Union county people should attend our Fair. First, they hould go in order that they may see the improvements that ?ic uemg uiuue in amerenc lines of | farming, such as raising horses, cattle, hogs and chickens. They will also learn the improvements that have been made on 'aney and making tatting. And in looking through the exhibits they nay find work such as crocheting, embroidery different kinds of pickles, jellies and preserves that they would like t ? have the receipt for, then they can find the maker and talk it over together. It is a good idea along educational lines. If each school would carry a good exhibit it would be a benefit not only to their community but to other schools and their communities. Macli pupil should try to take a fine exhibit and try to improve even the best, and not only the pupil should go but also the parents should attend and try to encourage the children. They should also take exhibits and exchange ideas with other farmers. There are also many pleasures derived from the Fair. The young people enjoy such things as shows. They also have carnivals and refreshments to sell such as candies, coca-colas and chewing gum. If everyone, both old and young, would attend, there would be great improvements from year to year in schools, farming and housekeeping. Floise Estes. Sedalia High School. The Union County Fair is primarily for the people of Union County, where they can come together and exchange ideas of farm and home life, and besides all one can learn, there is much to be seen and heard. If all the people of Union county would attend the Fair and bring a good display of products each year, and if interest were taken by all the people, not only the Fair would he better but the county would he more progressive, and not [>nlv the cnnnfv hut non?i? 1,1 m ?MV VI'V pvupic* A' UI instance, if all the schools of our county would send a good display from each school and every pupil attend the school would get a great benefit from it. There is also great educational and agricultural advantages whioh can be obtained if interest is taken, and most everybody likes to see the pretty booths of the demonstration agents, such as the tomato and corn clubs. The farmers can also learn more about cultivating their crops, and the interest in cattle raising, poultry raising and farming is stimulated. It would prove beneftical to anyone to attend our Fair, and therefore it IZE CC behooves us to do our part to upbuild it every year. All ladies and girls enjoy seeing exhibits of fancy work, such as crocheting and embroidery. Such things as this encourage us to do our part, os well as to try to encourage others. We should strive to upbuild our county and try to accomplish all the pood that we can, especially for our own county and people. We also become acquainted with our neighbors and all the people in our county, form new and lasting friendships which go far towards making our lives happier, outside of the educational and financial benefits we ieceive. It is a place of enjoyment as well as a great help in teaching many new things which might prove to be helpful sometime in the future. All of these ideas will entice anyone to come to our Fair. There are more than a few reasons for the people of our county to attend our Fair, but these are among the most important. Mattie Bell Sprouse. Sedalia High School. T think it is to the interest of ail Union county people to attend site County Fair because it is .. good < rganization. It is upbui'din-.r to the people of Union county. It was organized to get the people together, so they can see what the oeaple c f our county are doing and how many improvements they are making from one year to another. In this way we exchange ideas about a great many things. The farmers get many ideas about cultivating their crops and raising fine stock and many new ideas occur to them that would not have had they not gone to the County Fair. The ladies and girls also learn many useful lessons about fancy work, canning and cooking different eatables. I think in one sense the Fair is a schooling to us all as well as a pleasure. Therefore I think every person in Union county should attend the Fair that possibly can and try to carry something to exhibit so the Fair will hsuccess arui not a failure. I all would 3o our "duty arid get busy we could have a Fair to be proud of. I wish all of our county people could realize how important the County Fair is and how much there is to be learned by attending it. It is just wonderful to look around and see the evidences of the children of today, the beautiful art work and lovely hand work that they are being taught to do and the many different kinds of canned goods they have put up, nice pickels, preserves and jellies of all kinds. All of this is instructive to the young people of our county and many of us can learn a lesson from this. We see things that we do not know how to make. We can find out by asking how it is done and can get information all about it. then we have learned something and we can teach others in the same way. So it is with the farmers. They see some find agricultural work they don't understand and inquiring, they learn a useful letter. So let us try to see how many things we can carry to the Fair. You can learn about stock, poultry, agriculture, fancy work and about canning. I saw so many nice canned goods last year. I certainly got some good ideas about canning. I have canned about a hundred or more cans this year, so the Fair has heen a help to me as well as a pleasure. For instance, I have seen ladies looking at the fancy work that others have made and go home and make some like it, so there is much to be learned at a Fair. Probably there may be rich men today that made their fortunes by roinR to the County Fair and seeinR the display of thinRs, such as farm products, a better breed of stock or poultry and saw where they could Ret better profits by raisinR them. In looking over the innumerable p reasons why people should attend . fairs in general let us see who is ben- " efited by the attendance at Fairs. In interest to the merchant the Fair is of utmost importance. He finds here the indices of a people's commerce. He studies their wants in * implements and learns what articles of consumption that they do not produce and formulates his plans to supply these needs and when he furnishes the materials and merchandise that ^ his people need to help them in their various industrial pursuits, he is fillFillincr his ministry to mankind. The manufacturer learns here howto adjust his machinery to tit im- j nroved conditions and keen abreast of ?- ?lit umcn wan new metnods as they j" are discovered. At no place could the home-seeker ^ form a more accurate idea of the products of a country or the ideals of a people than at the annual Fairs which they hold. For here he sees every * product indigenous to its climate and the social and business life of its peo- ' 1 pie is visibly portrayed. The inventor is almost as vitally j| concerned in the Fair as anyone, for here he has an excellent opportunity to study the needed improvements in the various kinds of machinery used ^ in the production and manufacture of a peoples' products. If he adds a (| single improvement that conserxes human energy or expedites the maou- p facture of a single article or improves its quality?he also is fulfilling his ministry to mankind. When a wise Providence placed us i Union County, South Carolina, he laced us in the grandest county of te grandest and proudest State that le sun shines on. He placed us in le most delightful climate on the obe. He gave us the most polite, le most sincere, the most sytnpaletic and the most progressive people i earth. He Messed the people of nion county with a land that flows it ft milk and honey. To live is to he happ\ and why tould we not come to our County air and enjoy the social intercourse rovided in our annual meeting. The mutiful romances and happy marages which grow out of these social itherings are the natural conconiitits of this yearly event. Several years ago a gentleman from reenville, S. To his profound stonishment he learned that they ere manufactured in his home town f Greenville within a stone's throw f his home.
