M COFFEE owns JONESVILLE Jonesvflle, July 4.?In my young days the fourth of July was always observed as a holiday, but the day's doings were quite different from what they are these latter years. The men had shooting matches, barbecues and foot races while the good house wives had their good dinners and all passed off in peace and harmony. Miss Lila Black, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Black, was married last Thursday to Mr. Arthur Davis of Honea Path. Miss Black went up to 1'acolet, where sha met her intended lover and then and there they were married by the Rev. A. H. Best, the old folks were /willing to the match and it appears to me as one of the best and most economical ways for young couples to get married. Last week was not very favorable for the farmers and while many farms in the country are in fairly good condition many others are yet in bad condition and it will take good weather from now on and a late fall for some crops to make good. If the fighting will continue over on the Teutons' lines in France for a while longer like it has for the past few days it will certainly make Germany feel like she can't whip the allies much longer. It seems that England is just getting ready to show her hand in the great struggle while Germany has about played her best hand in the struggle. For one like myself who has stood before a rain of shot and shell and charged the cannons' mouth and had his comrades mowed down by the deadly missiles all around him can realize the awfulness of war. The fighting over in France for the past few days almost chills my blood with horror as I read these accounts. The 4th is being observed at the postofliee, banks and cotton mill. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thomas of Norfolk after visiting relatives and friends in Jonesville for the last few days, left this morning for their home. Mrs. Dr. II. T. Hames is at Camp Moore visiting her husband, who is in the United States service at that place. The corporations are paying the usual mid-year dividends. A gool many of our pleasure lovers have gone to Gaffney today to take in the festivities of the 4th in that town. Dr. F. M. Ellerbe, D. B. Free, Jr. and C. N. Alexander went down to Camp Moore Sunday to see the boys in camp there. The Rev. W. S. Porter announced Sunday at his church that their summer meeting would begin the 6th Sunday. Rev. Entrance examinations to the University of South Carolina will be held by the County Superintendent of Education at the County Court House Friday, July the 14th, 1916.
