L. GA1 i WEST SPRINGS / ' j West Springs, June 13.?The farmers are very busy now working out their crops. The rains of the past week or two have thrown every one back a little. The cotton is very >ma'l and does not appear to be growing off as it should. There was a very heavy rain here on last Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by a light sprinkle of hail and a strong wind. The land was washed a good deal and the cotton was beaten down by the rain, but there was no damage reported by the hail and wind. Miss Sadie Best, who taught the Parham school here during the past session, left for her home at Blackville on last Saturday. She was accompanied by Miss Mae Whitehead, who will spend a few days with her. Mr. W. J. Johnson of Spartanburg was here one day the past week on busness. Messrs. Henry and Hayne P. Smith visited relatives at Pacolet one day the past week. Mr. ami Mrs. W. A. Hyatt of Spartanburg spent the week-end here with relatives. Mrs. Robert Retsill and little granddaughter, Massie, of Cross Hill, ary visiting the famly of Mr. W. J. Betsill ths week. Jones spent a few days the past week at Spartanburg. Mrs. CI. T. Hyatt, who has been seriously ill for sometime, is no better. Mr. II. M. West spent several days recently at Bristol, Va. Dr. F. P. Salley of Buffalo was here one day the past week on professional business. Miss Inez. Vinson of Jonesville is visitnpr relatves here ths week. Mr. T. H. Munro of Unon was here Monday on business. Mr. .T. G. Rarron of Fort Lawn was a truest at the West Springs hotel the past week. ? Rev. W. R. Justus filled his regular appointment, at Rogansville on Sunday afternoon. Mr. W. II. Lawson went to Spartanburg Tuesday on business. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Gowan on last Thursday. Children's Day services will be held at Rogansville on the morning of the 4th Sunday in this month. A competitive examination to fill a vacancy at Annapolis will be held in Davis college on the campus of the University of South Carolina, June 23. One appointment is to be made from the State at large by Senator Tillman, and a second appointment is to be made by Congressman Byrnes from the Second congressional dis-^ trict, embracing the counties of Edgefield, Saluda, Aiken, Barnwell, Bamberg, Hampton, Jasper and Beaufort. Applicants must be between 16 and 20 years of age and without physical defects. All principals and alternates recommended to Senator Tillman or Congressman Byrnes will be expected to take whatever additional examination may be required by the naval authorities. Any competent young man completing the 10th or the 11th grade of a standard high school ought to qualify for this examination and for successful work in the Naval academy. The committee in charge of the competition is composed of J. E. Swearingen, State superintendent of education, Prof. H. C. Davis of the university department of English, and Pofr. E. I). Easterling of the university department of mathematics.
