Confederacy to be Blasted
Out of Stone.
Atlanta, May 20.?The work of pre
senting to the South a memorial o
the War between the States, probabh
unique in design and scope, formally
was begun at Stone Mountain here to
day. The mountain is a solid blocl
of stone and on its most precipitiou!
side will be carved figures nearly 4(
feet in height and scenes depicting thi
civil war. At the base of the moun
tain directly under the gigantic fig
ures will be blasted out an assembly
hall, in which the reunions of th<
Daughters of the Confederacy will b<
held.
Some years ago the United Daugh
ters of the Confederacy conceived th<
idea of such a monument and enlistee
the aid of S. E. Veneable, who own!
most or tne mountain. I'art of th<
ceremonies to-day was the presenta
tion to an officer of the Daughters o1
the Confederacy by Mr. Venable a deer
to that part of the mountain on whicl
the huge figures will be carved.
While practically all of the mountair
will be cut of solid rock, it wil
be necessary to erect corner posts. II
was the laying of the first block ol
one of these posts that occasioned th<
celebration to-day. The principal
speakers announced were: Federal
Judge Emery Speer and John Temple
Craves. Jason Borlam, a sculptor, will
have charge of the work.
The central group of the historical
carvings will be a number of equestrian
figures of Lee, Jackson, Forrest,
Johnson, Gordon, Davis anc
other heroes of the Confederacy.
These figures will stand about thirty-seven
feet, according to Mr. Borlam.
He stated that the horses would
stand twenty-seven feet high at the
withers. The group will extend for i
distance of about 3,000 feet arount
the face of the mountain at a height
of slightly less than four hundred
feet above the surrounding country.
It will take about eight years tc
complete the work, according to th<
sculptor.
