LAYMEN'S CONVENTION.
The South Carolina Convention of
the Second National Missionary Campaign
is to be held in Columbia, S. C.,
Feb. 6, 7, 8, 9, 1916.
Since the first National Campaign,
held in 1909-1910, there have been
many significant changes throughout
the universe. Just at this time practically
the entire world in power and
in might is engaged in devastating
war. Nation after nation is engaged
in a death struggle and hate stalks
abroad. As these words were written,
our United States of America is
the only world power at peace with
all the nations; and, as a direct result
of this situation, we are feeling, at h
home and abroad, the greatest oppor- I
tunities for service ever presented to
lis. It is imr*r*rf or?f fKof fltn 1 a vmnn
of our State should assemble again
to consider in a practicable and comnrehensive
way the general interests
of the kingdom, to face the special
opportunities confronting us, and to
plan to meet and faithfully discharge
our obligations to evangelize the
world; in short, to "Enlist for World I
Service."
The purpose is threefold: Tnforma- I
tion. inspiration and method.
The object of the Convention is to 4
furnish information about the work
we should do, to strengthen our con- |
victions that we can do it. and to present
methods by which it can be done. , <
Men who are in closest touch with |
our missionary work at home and !
abroad will bring first hand information
from the field. Men who are |
grappling with policies of administra- s
tion and methods will contribute their j
thoughts and experiences. Business
men of large means who have made I
large investments in the extension of |
the Kingdom, and men on small salaries
but with a high standard of
stewardship will join in the discussions.
A provisional program will be announced
through the press and distributed
through the mails as early
as practicable. No effort will be
spared in securing the most effective
missionary speakers available.
Team "C", the designation of the
group of speakers for the South Carolina
Convention, will give special attention
to the denominational conferences
to be held in the afternoon of
each day. In these meetings will be
considered the main "objectives" of
the missionary plans of the different ;
denominations. These meetings are _
meant to afford opportunity for a defl- F
nito presentation of denominational I]
purposes and of plans for their reali- E
zation. |j ;
The sessions will be held in the H
auditorium of the Jefferson hotel, with I
overflow accommodations provided for I
in the Arsenal Hill Presbyterian H
church and the Main Street Meth- I
odist church, both of which are within J|
/"Jock of the Convention aj,\flitorium.^j?^~
* r,"7ie Convention will open Sunday, '
Feb. 6th, 1916, at 3 p. m., and wili
continue through Wednesday night.
Every delegate should be present at
all the sessions, if possible. While attendance
at single sessions is worth
while, the cumulative effect of the program
is lost by irregular attendance.
The committee is planning definitely
for the registration of 3,000 men.
No limitations are made on the representation
of denominations or of congregations,
every denomination and
every congregation being entitled to
as many delegates as desire to attend.
The Convention will be self-entertaining.
each delegate being expected
to provide lor his own expenses. Ar
rangements will he made so that I
rooms may he reserved in advance, at U
the lowest possible rates. Delegates
will have the choice between hotels, I
hoarding houses and private homes of I
persons willing to rent rooms during I
the convention. When preferred, rooms j
may he secured and meals had at hotels
or restaurants. Visiting ministers
and pastors will he entertained
in the homes of the church people of 1
Columbia, and will not he charged a
registration fee.
The Virginia-Carolina Passenger i
Association has granted a round-trip i
rate to the convention of one and a
third fare plus twenty-five cents.
This is the same rate granted to the
Southern Commercial Congress, and
is the very best rate the railroads
grant to any convention.
