election held here Saturday for a two
mill extra tax for "school purposes." jj
This will make seven mills. There
was only a very few ballots cast.
Perhaps the citizens (did not generally
know it, or was not interested.
But they will be, and methinks I hear g
a whole lot of wailing already that
"Taxes are mighty high." For my
part, I do not know why an extra two
mills was wanted, or rather, needed. O
Every child in the district can go ten
months in the year, and on through
every grade (and some outside too) O
anu me teacners are well paid?as
evidence there is always plenty of ap- H
plications for the place. Recently an
acre and a half of land was bought
$100 an acre, to enlarge the lot already
around and now I think there is T:
a move to buy another acre or a half,
for a baseball ground. If they would
move off this high price to some other
place in the district more than twice O
as much land could be bought for the
same amount of money, and taxation
could have remained as it were, 5 A
mills. But they may need (?) a piano
for decorations or embelishments,
when perhaps gOod spelling would be A
better, I don't know. Now I am not
I opposed to good schools. I wish I T
could have had the advantages of
them when I was going, for I ha\?
not been inside a schoolhouse only as q
a visitor since I was 13 years old, and
the most of those years only for six
month of the year on the public, and ^
I feel the need of it sorely, but I do
not want to get intoxicated on more ^
taxation for school purposes, baseball (
grounds, etc., or what not. I have
seen right here, when the last month" ^
or six weeks of the school year, the
most of the boys did not do anything

been made explicit. I hope it is not
for increases of sales to the extent of (J
leaving everything else as skim-milk,
or creating a favored few. But it im
here, and?well I bolt, but I am get**
ting tired of hearing so much of the
small man not paying much. His "not
much" often comes near the "widow's
mite" mark, and it is much harder
for the "small" man to dodge taxes, J
than for the wealthier one. But, when <
we plan to vote extra taxation or T
bonds, which is the same, let us keep
