LETTER FROM OKLAHOMA. I

Please allow me space in your valuable
paper for a short letter whicn ,
may be of some interest to many of
your readers and especially the older j
men of the county. I
I have just returned to this town
from a ten days' visit to Mr. Wm. A, ,
Scott of Konawa Seminole Co., in the j
southwestern part of this State and <
it is needless to say that I enjoyed \
the visit as every South Carolinian ?
can imagine the reception one fresh y
from that State would receive from
a native of that grand old State, but j
who for 15 years has not gazed upon ]
the land of his childhood and youth. ]
Wm. Capers Scott was born in the '
North Pacolet section of what was
then and untl a few years ago a part I
of Union county. He served through- i
out the entire four years of the Civil
war and as he is now in his 69th year
vou can see he was a mere hov at. the
bepinninp of the war.
He was a member of Co. K, 2nd S.
C. Repiment under Capt. A. P. Vinson.
This repiment was commanded by
Col. "Bill" Wallace and was in Ker- i
shaw's division. 1 j
Wm. C. Scott is not a man to "blow {
his own horn," but recounts with preat S
pleasure the brave deeds of many Union
county men.
It was from such men as W. H. S.
Harris, W. A. WcWhirter, J. G. Lonp, t
Sr., and others that I learned years

Mr. Scott was a member of a certain
band of brave and noble men who, '
after lonp sufferinp and in many cases
imprisonment or exile from South Car- ,
olina, from a rule or povernment that
was so repulsive to the self-respect_
inp citizenship of that State and to
~ whom South Carolina is today much
indebted for its pood povernment. '
Mr. and Mrs. Scott have only five
children livinp, two boys, Claude and ,
J. D., both married: two pirls, Lula ,
and Grace, who are sinple and Mrs. .

None of the children have ever visitelJ
South Carolina but Lula and ,
Grace hope to some time in the near
future. The children all think thu.
next to Arksansas South Carolina and '
Georpia are two of the preatest States
in the union and, of course, we can ^
excuse them for puttinp Arkansas
first, as we would not have them be
disloyal to the State in which they
were born and, too ,they can't help because
they were born in Arkansas instead
of South Carolina. The unhealthy
climate of South Carolina during
the reconstruction period caused
South Carolina to loose many pood
citizens.
The first night I was with Mr. Scot*
his memory seemed to be at itk very
best for he must have asked me about
every man, woman and child he ever
knew back there and in so many c?.<j?s
1 had to answer "dead", and often! afSl
tor I hai./told him of the death of some*
comrade and friend he would become
silent for many minutes and, as h;> .
graded into the fire 1 could see the
tears roll down his cheeks and I knew
that his thoughts could only be understood
fully by his few remaining com,

He spoke with much feeling of W.
H. S. Harris. J. G. I.ong. J. W.
= Scott. W. A. Goforth, W. A. McWhirter.
T. L. Ilames and hundreds of others
and as I parted with him he asked
that in writing back home I ask his J
old friends, to remember him and'that \
he would be awfully glad to hear from 1
any of them. His greatest desire is to '
visit old South Carolina again, but his
health just at this time is not the
best and he fears the trip would be 1
too long and tiresome. 1
I trust that he may be spared and ^
that his health may so improve that 1
lit- may ue privileged at least once
more to see his native State and may '
God spare the hoys hack there that *
they may be on hand to meet him and *
refresh the friendship and memories '
that time and separation can never
blot out. 1
When the few who remain to tell of :
the thrilling days from '00 to '80 have 1
answered the last roll call may their 1
memory not only linger in the minds '
of the present generation hut throughcut
the generations of all time to come. '

IKES CARNIVAL.

"Ikes Carnival" held at the Cedar
Hill Graded school, on November 24,
proved to be quite a success.
Immediately after the doors were
opened and the crowd admitted, Prof.
E. O. Gunter, the State rural superisor,
and Hon. Rion McKissick of
Greenville delivered excellent and beneficial
addresses, the themes of which
were the betterment of school conditions
and education in general.
At the close of the addresses the
carnival oegan, confetti and the
"ticklers' beginning the fun. There
was a rush and push into the "midway"
for none could resist the tempta- ,
tion of seeing "the real live performing
monkey," "Andes, the great snake
eater," "the lovely bridal scene," "the
wonderful ground hog," "the swimming
match," and "for men only."

fair and the farmers are about
through gathering their crops and all
are well pleased with the prices received
for their staple crop. All are
now getting ready for Christmas.

over our county.
I attended the burial of Mr. R. E.
Palmer last Saturday. There was a
large gathering of friends and loved
ones there to pay the last loving tribute
of respect to a departed friend.
Mr. Palmer was one of our best citizens;
his mother before her marriage
was Miss Kelly and was born on the
Ridge and lived there until her marriage
to Mr. Wm. Palmer. Her paMnts
were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kelly,
Sr., one of the leading families of the
Pea Ridge and the deceased had manv
relatives and friends in oui community
who mourn his sudden dealth. He
was a Kood citizen and a progressive
farmer and worked to huild up his
community and county. Union county
has lost several of her best citizens
this year from young manhood to ripe

request of Miss Annie Kelly, principal
of the school, thanked the crowd
for the sum of $G1.68, $50.00 of which
was immediately handed to Mr. Williams,
agent of the Stieff Piano Co.,
