people are dreading the price of cotton.
but we had better not cross the
bridge before we get to it.
1 was just thinking of the many
dangers we human beings are sudjected
to. Not long since a negro was going
around on a crutch; he had been
kicked by a mule. Then a young man
came along with a broken arm, which
was broken by a base ba.l Then a negro
chaffeur had his arm kicked by an
automobile. The baseball foul can hit
vou from either side and the straight
ball can hit square from the front;
the automobile always kicks from the
front, but the mule will always plug

? ?...c uuugeruus and devilish
things to hurt humanity. The hateful,
devilish submarines will costs its
eyes, if it has any, and will strike below
the belt or the water line, while
the Zeppelin will go flying overhead
and pour out itsinfernal missiles upon
innocent people in the night time.
The Zeppelin makes me think of the
wrath spoken of in the l(5th chapter
and 21st verse of Revelations, when
the seventh angel poured oTJt his
wrath upon the earth. It seems there
is not a safe place on land or sea. The
safest place I have seen lately was a
storm pit near West Springs on the
side of the road.
On August 15th, Dr. W. (). Southard
celebrated his (>4th birthday. All
of his children and grand children
were with him, except one son-in-law,
ftnsign S. II. (Jeer, II. S. Navy, nowstationed
at Manilla. It was a happy
occasion for the Dr. and Mrs.
Southard, and a shower of remembrances
from both northern ami
southern relatives and friends were
received.
II. A. Morgan and S. .1. Nieholls,
candidates for Congress, spoke here
Saturday and they had respectable
audiences and good attention.
Mr. K. Breed in spoke in the
Baptist church Sunday on pohihition,
and our people were much interested.
They will certainly vote a good majority
in favor of it on the 1 1th of Septtembcr.
Mr. .1. M. Gault and family after
^pending several days in camp over
at West Springs, returned home last
week, feeling much imnrnvod
Mr. James Whitlock and family are
camping at West Springs this week.
Misses Carol and Lois Brown of
Greenwood, after spending awhile in
the mountain country of North Carolina,
are visiting their uncle and aunt,
Dr. and Mrs. VV. (). Southard. Mrs.
Geer gave a thetre party for them on
Tuesday evening.
Misses McWhirttr and Inez Spears
have returned from the exposition. (
Knight Foster and Jim Gregory,
two colored men, have bought an automobile
which adds two more to the
many already in town. i

OAKLAND
;I Oakland, Aug. 25?After having
enjoyed several .idle weeks out of the
field and many pleasant visits to
friends and relatives, the farmers are
again being called to the full realization
that farm work is awaiting their
g attention. Much fodder has been
li pulled and the weather is ideal for
this kind of work. Cotton is begi'nt
ning to show some of its white fleece
1. beneath the green leaves and by th<
- first of September, the harvesting of
- this crop will be in full force. Com
paring the crop with last year's crop
h it is rather backward, because last
s August at this date, farmers were
e picking cotton right along.
11 It seems that the temperance rallies
11 which are being held over the county,
1 are not very acceptable to the men,
B considering the number that attend,
ft Yes, the fight is on, but the weakest
and puniest soldiers are to be found
among the men. I do actually be
lieve they think the proposition too
/ great an undertaking and from what
one can hear them say, a century
* irom now on will be plenty of time to
s take up this prohibition question, that
r the land might be rid of this dastardly
e evil. But mind you, if this evil curse
continues another hundred years, the
- devil himself will be mortally a: banned
of having had a hand in the busii,
ness.
f The addresses made by Rev. L. L.
' Wagnon and Rev. L. M. Rice, at the
* temperance rally last Saturday at
Duck Pond church were of a very high
* standard and those failing to come
? and hear these addresses will surely
> feel a deep regret for not taking interest
enough to attend. The lay
- was very pleasantly spent. A granu
1 and sumptuous dinner was another
? feature that added pleasure to the
r occasion.
Mr. .1. K. Breed in, secretary of the
? State prohibition committee, gave a
? fine address to a large congregation
at Duck Pond last Sunday afternoon
' at four o'clock.
Rev. I). W. Garvin, delivered a very
impressive sermon to the young peo'
pie of Oakland school last Saturday
night. If it will l?e heeded, they will
certainly not go wrong.
Mr. J. G. Young, .Jr., in company
. with several others are enjoying a
camping expedition at Black springs
on the Forest this week.
Miss Louise Littlejohn, of Spartanburg,
is isiting her grandparents, Mi.
and Mrs. W. A. E. Black.
Miss Eunice Bobo returned home
Friday after spending several days
with relatives near Lockhart.
Miss Annie Lee, of West Springs,

Mesdames F. M. Unison and Leroy
David, of Bennettaville, are spending
some time with their mother, Mrs.
