1NEW HOPE
New Hope, March 29.?The typesetter
made a little mistake in reporting
my say about the taxes we
's will have to pay if we fail to vote
the bond issue. It should have read
e $5.00 poll tax and $3.50 road tax, it
said road tax for each.
Some of our neighbors are hauling
> guano today, and some are hauling
that I heard say were not going to
^ use any at all.
c Oats and wheat are beginning to
look good. The grain that is sowed
b, and the (|uantity of corn that is goil
ing to be planted and no guano much
used, will, I think cut our cotton crop
g right in half, with the reduction in
acreage that is going to be made in
our neighborhood. Some of our farmers
who used ten tons last year are
n only going to use four this year,
ie those who used five will use two and
all the way along this way, and of
e course there will be a lot who wil.
(S not use any at all; I for one, but its
because I cannot get it.
We farmers are using better seed
jA | this time and that pays considerably
iO' 'More in yield in proportion than fertilizer..
I see large pens of manure
e and compost fixed up, have not seen
ts this heretofore. We do not need to
buy near so much fertilizer anyway,
there is a way to have good crops
n without having to have so much gua s
no to everything. One among tht
very best farmers in Sumter county
n has never bought a single oound of
n commercial fertilizer, but the neighbors
who do, come to him to buy corn.
Now what one can do, another can :
do that same way. Some one may
r ask how this is done? Why, friend,
he diversifies and rotates. (Joes to
p the woods and rakes pine straw, hauls
r It into his stables, hog pens, and all
' other valuable places and fills tlv n.
knee deep with this stra\v the year
round, then he goes to the swamp
5? and hauls muck and scatters broadcast
over his land. I have seen this
with mine own eyes.
^ Today about four o'clock, P. M. the
death angel visited in our community
and claimed one of our choicest flow*
ers?this one being Miss Aileen Bi's!?
hop, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse
Bishop. She was sick for about six
e months; she bore her suffering with
e a christian fortitude, with a constant
- smile on her sweet and !> autiful
face. Aileen as we all called her, was
the second child; she leaves to mourn
'* her death, besides her parents, two
e sisters and two brothers. She .aid
1 before she died she was ready and
not afraid. She was our organ*M
e and was always ready to do the
work of her church and Sunday
n school, never too cold or too hot t !
her to n'o to church. Our whole community
is mourning in our loss of
p this sweet girl. Our deepest syins
pathy goes out to the bereaved faui1
ily in this dark hour.
