The Times endorses the efforts put |
forth to have "Clean Up" Day in this I
city. Let the ^ood work ko on.
If you can't have your own way,
let the other fellow have his. After
ail, you miirht he mistaken, wise
though you be.
If Germany will continue to sink
slups carry inn: passengers?men, women
and children, she will no down in
history as a nation famous in, brutality.
' We hope to see the "Great White
Way" put into operation on Main
street in the next few weeks. It
would he in keeping with the advanced
movements Union is making all
alonn the line. 1
We congratulate the citizens of
Jonesville upon their progressive <
spirit manifested i?i carrying the election
Tuesday for electric lights, j
We feel sure tin- spirit of optimism
they have shown is predictive of
rapid future growth and prosperity, j
Cotton on Thursday, April 1st, was
!( 1-4 cents in Union. You ask: must ;
one hold for a still higher price? We |
do not know, it is only guess work
Hut if one owes money and has cot- J
ton, it is a poor business to hold and
run tlv risk of having to sell for <
less at a later day.
Judge W. W. Johnson, our fellow <
townsman, who is making the rac' ?
for Congress to .succeed Hon. Joseph
T. Johnson in the fourth district, '
will make a good race, and, if elected. j
he will make a trood congressman.
He will certainly yet a handsome vole i
in Union county, his home county; I
and if we mistake not, will yet a (
good vote in each of the nth> r coun- \
ti s in the district.
(JOOI) FOR UNION '
Union people believe in Union's 1
future. As an evidence of this, one '
of our local banks, The Citizens <
National, purchased the $2">,000 bond
issue carried in the recent election }
by an overwhelming: majority.
Nicholson Hank and Trust Co., 1
another Union hank, had in a bid thai ^
was much higher than most of the j
foreign bids. Bids were received ]
from far and near, Chicago, Columbia
and many other points. The Citizens '
National Hank bid, being the highest j
was aeeepted. It frequently happens
that municipal bonds sell b dow par, j
and with a very hijrh rate of interest. 1
Union's bonds, bought by a local t
bank, brought par, with a premium of
five per cent interest. It shows that
Union people believe in Union's fut- (
tire. This i as it should lie. How
can the other fellow have faith in us ^i
if we have not faith in ourselves. *
And here's predicting that the next .
five years will witness a splendid ad- /
vance in growth and material prosperity.
'
We have enough unwritten laws; 1
what we need is a few more unbroken i
ones.
JONESVILLE
pi
Jonesville, March 29.?The 14 *?
months old child of Mr. T. A. Little- as
john died last Thursday at Pittsburgh.
Pa., where the grandmother, aj*
who was raising it was staying wiih
a sister. The remains were shipped
to Jonesville, arriving Sunday after- "
noon on the Carolina Special, and the ^
burial was held in the family bury- 'a
ing ground, near Jonesville. Rev.
Lewis M. Rice conducted the funeral mi
services.
M iss Aileen Bishop died at her
home three miles out from Jonesville
this afteVnoon, after an illness of sev
eral months. Miss Bishop was 20
years of age, and was a sweet spirited
young woman, well educated and
accomplished. She was a member ot J.
New Hope Methodist church and was G.
of the highest type. It seemed that L.
she had the promise of a long and Gi
useful life, but several months ago Jdisease
set its deadly fangs upon her W
young life and tender form and slow- J.
ly but steadily it made progress, A.
without alarm, until it laid its victim Jo
low. She was like the beautiful tints Jof
the rainbow and the bringht sun- T1
shine in the home, but these have Bgone
down and out, and darkness has M
settled over the home that was so M
bright L.
"Dearest Aileen, thou hast left us, W
Here thy loss we deeply feel, Lt
Tho' 'tis death that hath bereft us, M
(lod can all our sorrows heal.
Yet again we hope to meet thee,
When the day of life is lied,
Then in heaven with joy to greet thee
Where no farewell tear is shed." E<
Some of the fruit trees are put- L.
ting forth their blooms, but the cold I.,
weather is holding back most of the J.
blooms and perhaps it will insure a C\
crop of fruit. These hard times we J.
will need a good fruit crop to help 0<
us along through the struggle. !.
Dr. W. (). Southard continues quite M
sick and his condition is getting to be J.
acute. J.
Farmers are late with their prep- IX
arations for a crop, Init right now t'l
thev are getting in sonv good work. L.
M( ?ssrs J. W. Lipscomb and K. F. R.
Kelly have swapped their autos for Al
very fine new machines, and several
others have bought automobiles in the
immunity, which indicates prosperity
in the land. ?
Mr. Fastliani, the government {rood
roads expert was here Saturday ac- ^
cord in a' to ai nointm n: and d divered to
his ^addresses at the school audit!.rium
and Bowen's store, there were
but few to hear him at either place,

The Farmers' Hardware Co. was
sold by the receivers, Messrs John __
M. Little and C. X. Alexander, Saturday.
Dr. H. T. llames being the
highest bidder, besides he gets tlu
store, and is conducting the hardware
business at the same stand.
Miss Inez Spears, who is teaching ^1
