I ha< rather shrink from publicity in thi matter but I have been requested b; several of my friends to write agaii JS about bonds. I am sure I have stood for pro gross and advancement in all that na* take to be for those purposes and have been patriotic from my majorti; ' ,?' oxer half century ago, and 1 statu 111 no less for the same today, but I d not endorse every movement thu 1 comes along (some of them spas '' or modic), claiming to be for the publi led jr?od and more especially when i enx'olvcs big appropriations of men .> im- 'pwo hundred thousand dollars is in c*a' small amount of money to lay upoi a county these stringent times. an- have already voted one time to< ali- many for a big issue of county bond ia- that of the Spartanburg and Asm.ville railroad nearly forty years ago and the county has been paying ta to retire these bonds ever since, an< jl as I have often heard what an ol< i negro said "once bite, txvic > shy.' I am going to be shy of all big an propriations. The law enacting tin issue of the bonds, if elected by tin ^people, was conceived and born ii the mud and slush and rather spas modically, but by the time electioi 1 comes off the 6th of April for thoi; | adoption, the mud and slush will b gone, the roads dry and good and tin bonds will be defeated. I am re minded of the old fiddlers son' ^ called the "Arkansaxv Traveler.' ^ which runs thus. A traveler was passing the road in Arkansas an ^ ho came upon a farmer's house b\ % the road side that was not cover and he asked the man why he di I not cover his house and the renl> ^ was: "when it is raining I can't cove: it and when it is not raining it don't f need it,"and it is pretty much t.h * way with roads, where it is r liiii.i & nil f'ne wb d,? ml I b rr?*ir1c -i vo I jg dy and had we can't work them an 1 gj when the vain stop; and the ion ' ffl Ret dry and in good condition the jfcl don't need it. The roads are iroin.. & to he muddy and bad while it rd' tid all the winter?the bond issu" to the iSj contrary, notwithstanding. Mr. 1.. ? Wagnon had a long com muni ration na, in regard to the bonds in The Tim > lUr. two weeks since in support of the [er bond issue, but I can't agree with ajl him. good fellow and friend as lv is, he is away off and rather nrs leading in part of his statement. He makes a horrible picture of the deadly railroad crossing and would have Jail that clanger averted by vj-. ducts or subways and save the peopi from any danger. Well that would be unending money with a vengeance for there are a great many of these ems I ings in Union county. I don't want :? dollar spent to save mo from danger e on a railroad crossing for I have been crossing the railroad ever since the H first road came through the county in 11859 and I have never been hurt yet. and don't expect to be for I stop, look and liste^e Its only the careless and . JJflkk^v^iop.le that get hurt on the ^crossinVV'ind I don't want to he taxed to pay j.r them. Wherain. I think Mr. Wficnon is ! misleading is he says that the poor man would soon be relieved of paying personal property tax. 1 don't see how one man's personal property can be exempted from tax and anoln er man's property not exempted, and it would not he fair even to do so. ht The personal property of the county nays a good portion of the tax which be is right. Referring to the deadly road crossings, what about the automobile and motorcycle victims, they numeb: about as many as the railway crossings and most of them from carclessness or recklessness. Its up to ra the people to look out for number i| one and not want the county to do M As for road working, I claim to fi? ')p pretty well up on that, for I went f|| on road duty at IS years of a?r HI ,r>" years ago, I worked as cornea mon laborer, served as warner \?v. Wm as overseer. I liked the overseer the best. I have laid out n nv road |'8 for my si If, for the community and a ^?r ('oun1^', or helped to do so. : H ,iIIU 1 IIVVll I I <1 \ I ' V V I I \ vl I ? vjUI ' |? compass, l>ut tho work was a success. |lj I object to so much red tane in road ^ buildinc or any oth-T building. for if y| consumes too much time and monev jjM and leaves much less for the real ill purpose. Can't build a ehu??h 5| s. hool house or any other building K; these d tys without having so.m Kg noted architect, very oft 11 a yaakee. Sgj to make a Mue print that costs anyp where from tiflv to two hundred K dollars and all tlie money comes out p of the pockets of the people, p I say let's wait till the big war PI is over before we make any more Sjjjr bonds and see how we stand and not go ofT half-cocked because the road na ore muddv and two or three people in# v.ere killed at a railway crossing which might have been averted.
