Shots Are Fired.
Several shots wore exchanged with
he robbers when the hank was being
obbed. Later when the yeggmen
vere leaving, Harl Grillin ca ne to the
lorch and inquired what the trouble
.vas. The answer was one or two shots
ired at him by the escaping safe
dowers.
A telephone message from Nichols
:old of the robbery soon after it occurred.
Rural Policeman Hunter with
several deputies left by daylight for
Nichols, Sherilf Dottier with Officers
Perry and Davis going to Pee Dee,
believing that the yeggmen might
possibly att'inpt to hoard a train at
this junction. Shortly after daylight,
(Mheer lsyrd arrested two suspicious
characters, who were lodged in the
Mutlins jail. These were coming down
the railroad from Nichols. A few minutes
later a message was was received
telling of the arrest of Reynolds at
I'ee Dee. The same train that bore
the I'ee Dee prisoner to Nichols also
brought Guard Hobbins from the
State penitentiary with his bloodhounds,
who had been called over the
long distance telephone in time to
catch the early morning train.
Dogs Find Trail.
As a matter of precaution, the bank
building had been roped otr. In consequence
the trail was readily picked
up by the dogs, and the trail followed

veral hundred yards down the
road, thence into the public road to gi
the new bridge. Here the trail was di
lost, and the conclusion drawn was ei
that the robbers had entered a vehicle si
held in waiting. Robbins then took w
the dogs back to Nichols, where '100 w
or 400 persons had gathered. s<
Instructions were then given to a
have the suspect taken to the woods si
and made to climb a tree. Several n
people were made to follow close by a
to guard the movements of Reynolds
The dogs were then turned loose over o
the yard traversed by the crowd. They b
at once picked up the trail of Roy- a
nolds, which was followed to the tree. j>
Others were made to strike trails, but t
the dops repeatedly refused to follow ']
these. Reynolds was placed in the n
jail at Marion to await developments t
in the case. 1
In the Building. t
In the adjoining building on the 1
second story is the telephone ex- {
change. Here the operator was asleep l
and in an adjoining room almost over j
t ne bank a negro barber. The impact 'i
from the explosion almost threw these ,
out of bed. They rushed to the win- 1
dows to see what the noise was and 1
j discovered three men directly under- ]
neath them. By this time many
sons living nearby were up and were 1
running through the darkness toward
the bank when the second charge was i
touched off. ]
