KELTON
Kelton, S. C., Dec. 7.?I am home
again. There is no place like home,
unless one is sick and they are better
off at the hospital, for that is a better
place for them to get well. The poet
knew what he was doing when he
wrote the lines of "Home, Sw^t
Home." I came home last Thursday
and I believe I am still improving and
hope soon to be strong enough to go
to Union and other places. I was well
treated at the hospital. They were
coming and going all the time I was
there. I found out long ago that one
did not have to go to old Kentucky to
see good looking women. We have
them in plenty in South Carolina. We
Vnay have to go to see fine horses and
get fine liquors but the women are
here and I do hope' they, in South
Carolina, will never be seeking suffrage.
It is too bad for the fair sex to
be dabbling in dirty politics. Their
good influence will do more to remedy
the evils without the ballot than witn
it. If they could vote how long would
it be before men would be arrayed
against their wives and peace in their
homes be destroyed forever. If pure
love and kindness will not make a
sober man out of a drunkard no force
pf law can do it. It is a fact that the
most of drinking men get good women
for wives. Mr. Editor, by your
{permission I will relate a story I
heard years ago of two drunken men.
It is very common with the noor unfortunate
lovers of strong drink to
talk of their good wives. One night
two drunken men in a bar room were
arguing which had the best wife.
They finally decided to go to" each
one's home and decide. About 1 or
2 o'clock at night they left for one of
their homes; on arriving the home
man rang the bell; the good lady had
retired and did not get to the door as
soon as he wanted her to; he began to
curse and swear. She opened the door
and met him with a kiss and told him
to bring his friend in. He at onjee,
inquired if she had warm supper, she
replied no; he began to curse and she
said she had been up late waiting for
him to come but the supper had got..~r,i
t ...:n ? ?:j
(/VII VVIIU. X Will WClIIII 11, ?aiu.
While she was warming it, she was
singing: "Jesus lover of my soul; let
me to thy bosom fly." When the supper
was ready she retired and left
them. Next morning she got breakfast
and while preparing the meal she
was singing, "Rock of Ages cleft for
me; let me hide myself in Thee." The
The visiting man said: "How can you
be so happy, Mrs.? ? Your husband
is a drunkard." "Well," she said, "my
husband in an unfortunate lover of
strong drink and I know all the pleasure
he will enjoy will be in this world
and I want to make it as pleasant for
him as possible." It was the fatal
shot that entered his heart?. He dropped
his knife and fork and said: "1
never will, by the help of God, drink
another drop of liquor.' The visiting
drunkard made the same vow and so
ended the test and they both joined
the church and made good members.
Now, my dear women, you who have
drunken husbands, when they comb
home drunk, do not break or pour wit
their liquor, but do. like this good
man did. It will take all the grace
God has in store for you to do it.
I appreciate the calls and kind letters
received from friends while at
the hospital and the most comforting!
were from my little grandchildren and
my little Sunday school children. I
was so glad they had not forgotten
