500 DANCERS AT BALL
GIVEN TO AID SOUTH
New York, Oct. 2(5.?Society is still

the proceeds from which are

situation of the South. It was under

cratic League of the State of New
York and the Woman's Democratic
Club of New York City. Five hundred
guests were present.
The grand march, which commenced
at a quarter after 1 1, was led by
William Randolph Hearst and Mrs.
John S. Crosby. Hehind them came
Mrs. Hearst and Ralph Stanton. They
were followed by Miss May Stanton
and Mr. Rapp, Mr. and Mrs. John
O'Leary, Mr. and ?^lrs. Westergren,
Percy Knott and Miss Therese Guiefaile,
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Donnell.
Many of the women wore cotton
gowns, carrying out the spirit of the
occasion. These, standing out in black
and white, for the most part, made a
charming spectacle as the dancers
glided over the floor.
Both the great ballroom and the
'Green Room on the second floor of
the hotel were thrown open for the
occasion. In the center of the dance
hall stood a bale of cotton, donated by
William Randolph Hearst. The money
derived from its sale by raffle, like
the proceeds of the ball, went to the i
relief of the cotton situation.
To lend plantation realism to the i
occasion a negro orchestra droned its ,
music from one end of the ballroom.
A horde of real pickaninnies scampered
about the floor.
The program of the evening tended
toward the old-fashioned dances, such
as were danced by the belles of the
South before the Civil War. The
gpests were more than willing to for;
get the tango for one evening, at
least.
In the receiving line were Mrs.
j John S. Crosby, chairman of both the ,
! clubs, under the auspices of which the
I ball was given; Mrs. Ella O'Goripan
